The story is a metaphor...
In the real world, even inside the sweetest OLD LADY there could reside a vicious WOLF!
Yes, even your sweet 84 year old next door neighbour, or aunt, could be a serial killer...
"Behold I send you out as sheep amidst the wolves"!

At the time I learnt that if you take no notice of the person reading the story, you'll get a clip round the ear.
More than a few years later, I'd say that the story is about many things, from the ease of deception, to gullibility, to the exploitation of the good, right through to stereotyping being a very bad move.
As for your theory of being wary of men. That's just blatant stereotyping .... there are good and bad from both Venus and Mars.

i learned that we must always be carefull when we walk alone no matter that place is a stranger place to us or not. we must be alert to the person behaviour next to us even they are our relatives or friend coz that bad wolf can pretend to be anyone around with us...besides i also learned not to eat what others people offer to us unless we are very sure of it safetyness....
this fairytale i heard since i was a kid makes me think twice on everything...........

Don't talk to Big Bad Wolves! And perhaps don't go out into the woods alone.

that wolves don't make convincing grandmas - even if they are wearing the whole nightshirt / mop cap / glasses combo !
also learnt from that story that if u get into great difficulties, there will be a man with a big chopper who comes to your rescue !

That children should be forced to go to bed frightened out of their wits - have nightmares - and real life will seem so much better by comparison.
