Arthritis is something I've lived with for many years. Due to this condition I had a knee replaced when I was 50. I take one diclofenac 75mg pill twice a day, morning and night. I've tried other anti-inflammatory meds and have had swelling as a side effect which is more burden on the joints. Weather changes affect the pain. When weather is a factor in my pain level I add Motrin to my regimen, 800 mg at a time. This builds up in the system and can assist in getting through painful spells. I also have fibromyalgia. I began taking Cymbalta 60mg a day a year ago. Although this med is for depression, studies show it decreases pain.
I stay away from citrus as a massage therapist told me citrus flares up the inflammation. Cherries, dried, fresh, frozen or from a can are said to be helpful with gout and arthritis. I've not been consistant with that but a friend of mine swears by it.
Arthritis, my friend, is life-changing. I don't believe the pain is ever completely gone but can be minimized some days.

I am afflicted with the exact same thing right now, and I know what you mean about age, I'm only 43 and in the last 3 yrs its all kinda been a smack in the face, as I have always been a very active and athletic person. I have noticed that this time of year, with all of the humidity, my gout really flares up, I even had it in my knee 3 wks ago. When you flare up, you simple have no choice but to stay away from putting any pressure on the joint, keep it elevated, and I take Lasix along with my pain meds to take some of the swelling down. Also, stay away from salty foods, and rich meats. Your pain meds sound like your doctor is on the right path in trying to ease your pain, but sound like you need something additional for breakthrough pain. Although, I don't think that, short of knocking us out, that they can ease the pain of this type of arthritis flare up completely.
Good Luck to you, I know it hurts!! :(

Hey sorry to hear about condition I am 48 and I was found to have OA when I was 45 so your not to young to have it. About your gout take your meds and deff stay away from drinking beer and other sprits. Keep your weight in check and stay active do some sort of work out routine. I have had 2 knee surgies done on my left knee since 2004 so I can tell you that its a pain but you can deff live with it. Nothing you can really do about it other than make the changes so that you can avoid having a total knee replacement. Also look into SYNVISC. There web site can provide you with some good info that you can discuss with your dr. Good luck!

I have lived with arthritus since I was 13. People always used to tell me I was too young for this disease also, but the disease does not care. I use diet and meditation to control the pain, and exercise to strengthen muscles around the joints. It sounds like your diet is well under control. (I'm sure your doctor has told you to reduce salt and especially fatty foods). I have found that when I eat potatoes or tomatoes I have flare ups, but this could be an individual thing. Also, I have found that when I am stressed, tired or overly hungry the pain is worse. The main thing is to treat yourself well, but never give up.

well.. those pain relievers that you have mentioned are quite good.. well you can try Naproxen Sodium (flanax).. also an anti-inflammatory drug at the same time a pain reliever.
WEll.. there are a lot of younger people who have been diagnosed with arthritis. Sometimes, these pain relievers won't be that effective if you haven't change your lifestyle.
Lessen your activities, you might be putting too much pressure on your joints, but do not be sedentary ok?!. if you're obese, try to lessen your weight, your joints might be pressured also cause of your heaviness...
consult your doctor if symptoms still persist..

I would recommend consulting a rheumatologist (a dr that treats diseases and disorders of the bones and joints, yep including arthritis) if you haven't already. They will be able to tell you for sure what kind of arthritis you have, whether it's due to gout or another kind of arthritis type. There are over 100 different types of arthritis and some of them occur because of certain diseases such as psoriasis as one example.
Another good source of information about arthritis can be found at: http://www.arthritis.about.com
