330,000,000's (33 Crore) demigod & demigodess
Just like Lord Brahmä, Shiva, so many others. Indra, Candra, Varuna
So there are 330,000,000's officers of Krishna. Must be. Such a huge affair. If for managing a small shop, we have got so many things... This is manager, this is assistant manager, this is... In such a huge universal affair, there Krishna has got assistants. And 330,000,000 assistants within one universe, and there are innumerable universes. And each and every universe, there must be similarly 330,000,000's or like that. They are called demigods. Demigods means exactly under the position of God. Just like here there is governor. Immediately under him there are secretaries. Similarly these demigods, they are different officers, secretaries, directors under God. We don't deny the existence of demigod, but we don't worship that he is God. We worship, we give him all respect. Just like if the queen's secretary comes here, we shall give him all respect because he's queen's secretary. But we'll never accept that he is king. No. That is not possible. That is sane. It is not that... We Vaishnava, we are prepared to offer respect even to the ant, and why not to the secretary? When we offer to a big officer, it is not that we are flattering. It is the etiquette, it is the duty, to offer respect to the respectable persons.
So we give all honor to the demigods, but we don't accept the demigods as the Supreme. That is Vaiñëava philosophy. There may be 330,000,000's or 330,000,000's of secretaries, but we say... Just like it is stated in the Caitanya-caritämåta: ekale éçvara Krishna. Éçvaraù paramaù Krishnaù [Bs. 5.1]. The only master, or controller, is Krishna. Ära saba bhåtya. And all other demigods... Just like Lord Brahmä, Çiva, so many others. Indra, Candra, Varuëa. 330,000,000's, how many we can remember? It is not possible. But there are. So they are all servants.

There's no counting them. For one thing, there are different ones from all over the world. Then some of them correspond very closely, and could be seen as the same entity. The Greek and Roman gods and goddesses are so similar that it's pretty clear the Romans were simply copying from the earlier Greeks.

Thing is, most modern pagans adopt god and goddess images and concepts from everywhere, but don't take them as literally as the separate cultures that gave them birth did. We generally recognize that they are essentially metaphors for something more profound, abstract and esoteric. So, for example, a statue of Venus is understood to be a representation of Love and Beauty personified. But do we consider Love one goddess and Beauty another? Other cultures might. Or they represent Love with Cupid, who is Venus's son in some legends.

Don't bother trying to count them. Just find those which serve your purposes and don't worry about numbers.

Thousands.

What I don't understand is how people can believe in one and not the others. If you believe in one because it says in a book that this particular god is real, why not believe in the other gods? They are also written as real in books.

Whats the difference in one book claiming to have a god, and another book claiming to have a different god?

Doesnt this mean that holy books are NOT evidence of existence of a god? If you think that one holy book is fact and the others are made up you are clearly hypocritical

There is only one Creator but He/She has many faces and means different things to different people. We are not all the same and our understandings are not the same. Each one of us has a piece of God/dess within us. God is everywhere and everything to everybody. So in answer to the question there are countless 'Gods' but we are all just part of The One.

"That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah,
You alone are the Most High over all the earth."
