find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

You are certainly not wasting your time but just because the exercise is focused around your tummy it doesn't mean that that is the area you will reduce body fat. Body fat is basically stored energy and gets used when we exercise, so hoola hoop will help a little but as you are using relatively small muscles the affects will also be relatively small. The movement though will use the stomach muscles and will help to firm them up, but this is also slightly wasted if you don't have good posture in the first place (the back will do all the work).
So my advice to you is to do an exercise that uses a larger muscle group. eg. the legs as in running, cycling etc. The larger muscle group will use up more energy and therefore you will see quicker results (woopee).
As for stomach muscles I have written an article on my blog all about stomach muscles and the best exercises for them. Each one comes with a how and why section and also includes a video so you can see how to do them correctly.
Visit the link below and when the site comes up go to the ab section on the left hand menu. It will show you 2 articles at a time when you've read them just click on the previous entries at the top or bottm of the page to view the next 2.

I hope this helps you and I wish you all the best with your exercise.

any sort of cardiovascular exercise will help you lose fat but where you lose it from is up to genetics. often if you put weight on in a certain area easily it is tough to get rid of it and it is often the area you lose fat from last. the best thing to do would be lots of different types of cardio exercise- running being scientifically the highest calorie burner- and combining that with toning exercises, i.e crunches, and a healthy diet. also try laying off simple carbs (like white bread) and processed food.

Tone doesn't exist, you can only lose fat, gain fat, lose muscle, gain muscle.

Tone refers to hardening of the muscle area, this is called the pump effect from stimulation of small muscle fibres, its a temporary effect. bBlood rushes to the muscle with nutrients making it hard.

Now we have that out of the way, hula hooping is called cardiovascular activity which burns calories so you are aiding fat loss doing it which is good but your primary job is to consume a calorie deficit, burning more calories then you consume to lose fat off your stomache.

Eat clean, healthy, and perform cardiovascular activities daily, you will lose fat.

No hula hooping for ab work is a joke, if you want real results you need to jog and/or do numerous situps.

That should help but, nothing beats sit-ups for flattening the tummy! They sure helped me to get a flat tummy after I had my two children!! I am now, 52 and I still have my flat tummy too!

Probably. My sister, my boss and myself started taking belly dancing lessons for the same thing. It is fun and when we practice we can really feel the muscles(that we forgot we had). I don't see any big difference yet, but we just started. When you hoola hoop you are doing the same movements, just with different goals.
