Any brand can have ingredients you are allergic to, so follow the instructions for an allergy test before you put it on your hair. No brand is formulated for quality on any particular hair color.
I have come to prefer certain brands because of their performance on my customers hair. I love L'Oreal because it has the prettiest finished look of them all, in my opinion. It has a wonderful shiny look that lasts from one re-touch to another (3 to 4 weeks.) I find that the other brands either loose their shine in a shampoo or two, or never have any shine at all. We all have different preferences.
Since you are starting with the darkest hair color there is, you should pick a color that is a little lighter than the results you want. The way hair color is formulated is to apply it to hair that has been bleached to white, first. So if you put the color you like on your hair, you would hardly be able to tell the difference. Look to see if the color on the box has a red or green tone. The red tones will give you a red tint to your hair, and the green ones should prevent that, mostly.
My top recommendation is to go to an expert colorist and have your hair done, so you really get the results you want. Best of luck to you.

Your hair is pitch black. Is this from colour or is it virgin hair. If you have already coloured it. I recommend having it professionally highlighted then colouring it with a 10% volume hair colour either a level 6 or 7 for 30 to 45 minutes. This will darken the highlights but also make it a very nice brown with some depth and dimension to it. If you want a cool brown have the stylist use an ash or blue base brown, if you want a richer brown and don't mind red undertones use a natural series. If you have virgin hair use a 20 volume with a level six or 7 in colour. This will help it from getting to brassy and you'll have more control over the product. I prefer using Goldwell colour on my clients with hair that dark because they offer a series called Nutrilites which is a special lift for very dark hair and offers good controlability. Remember colour doesn't lift colour so if it is previously coloured you need to highlight w/ bleach and then cover over that with a ten volume, don't do the entire head though because you will risk integrity of the hair if it has been previously coloured. See if you have friends who can recommend a good colour specialist. Yes, you can attempt to do this at home from a box colour but remember you get what you pay for and in the end you may have to have a salon fix it anyways. Hope this helps. Most salons offer free consultations.
