I have heard that pretty much all pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills, I was wondering how true this is? And if it is such a problem shouldn't the government do something to make laws harder on buying dogs. I am just upset, I went into a local pet store the other day and saw a bunch of dogs that had been there since December because apparently no one wanted them and they were pure bred breeds, and I just feel like if these puppies weren't in that environment people would had wanted them. Any thoughts on this, should buying a dog be more regulated, etc. Why is it so easy for these stores to buy dogs from puppy mills and get away with it.

That is so true what you all are talking about with Petland, I have gone in there myself and seen dogs that look so sickly. But I was talking a bout little pet stores not chains. But I am sure they all get them from the same place. And what really bothers me is, I live in Chicago and there is this pet store called Pocket Puppies and they sell tiny, sick looking dogs that they consider to be "designer" dogs. A lot of the breeds they sell that are mininaturized shouldnt be, there is no such thing as a tea cup sized yorkie, bulldog, havanese, shiz tzu, and maltese. That really upsets me.

Yeah it is definately true.. Not sure why the government does do much about it.. You could complain to see if they will do something.. Unlikely tho, they tend to avoid things like that unless more people take issue with it. They are getting their tax money from the stores when they sell the puppy and everything else so they don't want to go around busting all the petstores out there..
If it's a truly abusive situation sometimes the SPCA will get involved and clear the store of the pets..
You should look into how you can stop petstores from selling pets.. Unlikely it's going to happen, but you can give it a try.

You also have to be careful how you get the government involved in things.. They have a tendency to move in and take over and spoil things that were once a good and legitmate thing, now it's ruined for everyone..

The way to fight puppymills and petstores is to stop buying pets there.. Stand out front when you see people going in and hand out flyers outlining why they shouldn't buy pets from petstores and give them other options. Some people don't know any different and need education!

I dont know why the government wont regulate this more but it is true that some ppl just breed dogs to sell to pet stores and it makes me sick . what is worse is those ppl who buy dogs from pet stores and supporting the puppy mills . I have been thrown out of several pet stores because i see ppl buying a dog from a pet store and i tell them do you realize that you are supporting a puppy mill ? then they change their minds and I am asked to leave because I just cannot keep my mouth shut on this issue. So maybe if more of us open our mouths that will force the puppy mills out of business. good luck.

The problem is every time they attempt to legislate puppy mills outta busness what they end up doing is drafting laws that end up ONLY allowing puppy mills.
NOBODY is gonna admit to being a mill after all.
My state made an effort (I won't go into the details but #1 it allowed no dogs in the house)- the bill review committee wrote 30 pages of problems and pointed out that it was gonna do the opposite of its intent and in the end even the writer of the bill wouldn't support it..... CA AB1634 allows intact animals ONLY in puppy mills after 2009- they have puppy millers lobbing FOR the bill at every session....

I think a lot of people breed dogs just to sell them to pet stores. They see puppies as money. I'm not sure why it isn't regulated more. My local shelter euthanizes 30 thousand animals a month. It sickens me to see even more unwanted dogs or cats in pet stores. All my pets are rescues. They either came from the pound or were strays. I just happen to have a pure bred that was a stray! I feel just as frustrated as you do. I wish I had better answers for you

I don't like how they do things at petland. Even if you are there to just look, the employees are constantly watching you to see if they can make another sale. I have 3 adult dogs and 4 five week old puppies at home. I'm not looking for another. They don't like it if you takl to another customer in the store while they are trying to make a sale. A women was there this weekend looking at a minpin. I noticed and I went up to her and told her that I had 4 puppies at home, which will be ready in a week and a half. This woman started talking to me about my puppies and the employee that was trying to make a sale said to us to take our business outside because she didnt need us in there messing up her sale. I may have lost that puppy a new home, but it just goes to show you that even the employees are in it just for the money. I believe they make commission off what ever animals they sell. Besides the woman I was talking to said she just wanted to see the puppy. She said that they wanted $1,600 for the minpin. I told her she would be better going to a breeder. Atleast you know what you are getting if you do your research. She gave me her card and told me she would call me in another week to see how my puppies were doing. She also said she would like to see them. I know I made that employee at petland mad, but they can really get on your nerves sometimes, especially when you tell them you are only there to look and they start handing you puppies and continually try to sell sell sell. Alot of the puppies, more than less do come from puppy mills. I have read too many things about them for it not to be true. Yes they may take in from the shelter, but I highly doubt it.

Yes, pet stores should be shut down, all of them. Any puppy that comes from a pet store came from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. But more likely a puppy mill. And here is why you should NEVER support a puppy mill:

Even if you buy a toy or treat from a pet store that sells puppies or kittens, you are supporting PM's.

BOYCOTT puppy mills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first off puppy mills are legal and regulated by the USDA, so for pets stores are getting puppies from a source that is legal and regulated.
Problem is USDA standards are that a cage only needs to be large enough for an animal to stand and turn, and that it is given food and water as well as shelter from the elements
Most pets storesbuy thier puppies throu HUNT, a broker who buys from breeders who can be mills to just a person who has extra pups. some pet stores like jacks aquarium and pets take left over pups directily from the breeder and at times have no pups at all, some pets stores like Petland get their pups thru HUNT and thru shelters, supporting both so they don't look bad. But if it's purebreed and it's from pet land then the conditions the puppies were breed in are most likely less than ideal.
the best is to stop mills from exisiting is to require better minimum standards for animals like dogs and cats breed to be pets, cause to me breeding dogs in bird cages ain't cool, even if it is legal
And no good breeder would give thier pups to a petstore because they know a puppy sitting in a cage for days to months is horid for it's socalization and most people who buy from pet stores are buying the animal with no reseach and the pet stores like petland encourage people to buy an animal based on looks.
Did you know alot of the dogs in pet land range from 700 dollars to well over 3000 for designer as well as pure breed dogs, they charge for show quality animals and given people credit cards to pay for the animals.
So pet stores feed off of ignorant people who think they are getting a good deal on a pup because they are making payments, many of the people are also first time dog owners so they don't know better.

This is definitely illegal and the gov. should do something about it, these pet stores claim to care about dogs but the reality is that they only care about the profit people doing this should get some kind of punishment because they don't care about the puppies welfare

If you see bad conditions in any pet store you should report them. Call animal control, police anyone who will listen.
It really break my heart the way some people can be so cold hearted!!
