Atheism is a religion in the same way NOT stamp collecting is a hobby.
WHY?
1. There Is No God
Atheists do not believe in a god or gods. This is a tautology, of course, since the term "atheism" itself carries that literal meaning.
2. There Is No Common Belief-An atheist is someone who does not believe in god. Period. Beyond that, it is for you yo believe.
3.There Are No Laws-Most religions feature a set of laws or regulations, ranging from what not to eat for breakfast to who thou shalt and shalt not kill and or covet. In atheism, this is entirely lacking.
4.There Is No Church or Ritual-None
5. There Is No Unified Conception of Spirituality
6. There Is No Scripture
Christianity has the Bible, Islam the Koran; Judaism has the Torah, Hinduism the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. Atheism has no scripture or sacred text. Darwin's Origin of the Species, while held in high regard by many atheists, doesn't count.
7. There Is No Priesthood 8. There Is No Founder

9. There Is No Concept of the Afterlife
10. There Are No Holidays
11.There Is No Creation Myth-
No The Big Bang THEORY is not accepted by all and is not a set in stone BELIEF by all it is still being tested and scrutinized... the difference between religion and atheism is we will test what we believe until it becomes fact.

Here, here ! Not to mention there is no book burning or killing of people of different faiths. We don't have religious specific schools to teach our children close mindedness.

actually as i was recently told the actual definition of atheist does not mean you have no faith. It means you don't believe in a deity. So by this rationale, buddhists are atheists, but pagans and zues worshippers are not atheists.

Buddhism and animism don't have any gods but still magic and spirit. So they are atheistic religions if you can understand. Check the dictionary, this is true.

Atheists who are strict non religion of any kind, maybe we need a name for that, but as you say that would be naming a non-entity. You cannot classify people as to what they don't preach. That's backwards thinking that can only come from a preconcieved notion.

So after all that, the answer is just that you can't label all those who don't believe your thing into some group of thier own, they are not a group at all.

I'm not sure why you would ask a question and then proceed to answer it yourself. That seems just a bit redundant. Perhaps you an an atheist who has faced some hostility... or even a member of one of the organized religions you mentioned, who just can't resist concerning himself with other people's business. Therefore, I think my answer in a nutshell has to be, "So what?"

"Religion" has several meanings a couple of those are: A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader, or: A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.
Personally, I think the latter describes Atheism. Wouldn't you agree? Principle is: A basic truth, law, or assumption. If you believe/know so strongly that it is true that there is no G-d, that is your "religion"

"Atheists do not believe in a god or gods."

It is a doctrine of belief/attitudes held by a group of people concerning a supernatural power. That defines a religion! It is a religion. The religion of the ungodly.

Check out the definition of religion...

Why Atheists don't care...
1. because it doesn't make any difference. Call it "a way of thinking" or "personal belief" or whatever you want to call it. I doubt most Atheists consider it a religion.

And this is an issue for you? First off, religious books are all written by man. Even my religion is written by man. I admit to that. Why does one matter and the rest don't for you? There has to be a founder because they didn't just come up with a name for it all of a sudden as a group.

Hugs

How about going simple: atheism is not a religion because atheists don't believe in it??

"Not collecting stamps is a hobby" is very good and explains your point. No need for other explanation, but somehow I have a feeling you'll get the whole Bible posted as an answer by somebody, who'll pray for your (and mine) lost soul.
