If "Stiffy" were true, what would the rest matter??
Oh, & "Yes, Sir" is what I always said to my boss (25 years ago) right before he raised my little skirt & laid me over his big desk.....

Calling someone sir is a sign of respect
However, sir is usually used in a formal setting to address someone older or more high ranking. So it can be interpreted as you thinking the guy is old

I work in a retail store. I always call guy customers Sir. No matter in their 20's or 60's. I feel a respect for them that's why I call them sir.

Not at all, my mom always told me to call a man "sir" if you did not know his name, and was the polite thing to do. Sounds a lot better than hey you guy. Or hey dude for example.

No, it's just a formal and polite way to address a man. It's like "ma'am"or "madam". It sounds old-fashioned, but no one can get offended by it. It's very general. It shows that the person calling you sir has manners and respect for you.

No, I'm from the South, it's just a matter of respect and politeness. If you are over 15 yrs. old, you can be called "sir" or "ma'am".

I say "yes sir" alot, usually just joking.... but also it's a polite way to get someone's attention if you don't know their name. so I say no, it doesn't mean you are old or unattractive.

it depends on the context, but usually when i call someone 'sir' it's not because i find them old or unattractive. sometimes it's quite the opposite..!

I use sir out of politeness (unless I know their last name, then it is Mr. so and so). Just as with women, I say Ma'am, unless she is OBVIOUSLY younger.
That is the proper way to address someone.
