If you want an "extra" dry Martini, then chill the Vodka or Gin based on your preference for 1-5 minutes in a tumbler with crushed ice and you can either shake or stir the Martini, keep in mind shaking actually waters down the alcohol. Then open the vermouth bottle put your nose over the opening inhale deeply then in the glass that you have poured the chilled alcohol, whisper VERMOUTH over the rim of the glass and you have the ULTIMATE dry Martini. You might also go to a book store and grab the complete guide to Martinis and pick a flavor that you might enjoy, the combinations are endless...

traditionally a martini is gin and a splash of sweet vermouth

Now they are mostly made with vodka and dry vermouth
with an olive

They are all different kinds

a dirty martini
vodka dry vermouth and some of the juice from the olive jar

Some now have oyster juice in them and have a little sea salt on the rim of the glass some people thinks it sets the mood

some come with sea salt

The difference of shaking and stirring

stirring just mixes the drink and does not make it too cold
if you like a cold drink they fill a shaker with ice and pour the vodka or gin with the dry or sweet vermouth and any other flavors put the lid on and shake

Shaking it through the ice cools it down makes it very cold

they then strain the ice out of it and you have a cold drink that is not watered down.

They have the apple martini /strawberry martini / and a bunch of other fruit flavors

A classic Martini has gin and a touch of vermouth and is garnished with an olive or onion.

These days, vodka martinis are very popular. Most are pretty much straight vodka, and if it is good vodka, it has no taste, so BEWARE!

A martini is vodka & vermouth.
Now you can get flavored ones too. They can be sweet/sour/dry/or salty. Try a carmel apple martini, It's vodka, vermouth, and apple pucker with a small amount of carmel sauce. Yummy!

Warning!!!!

Martini's, no matter what flavor are strong drinks.

there are like 100s of different martinis. A regular martini is with gin and tiny bit of vermouth or it can be bone dry and just be gin and an olive. You can ask for a vodka martini too.

A vodka martini is vodka and a hint of vermouth, and the traditional olive skewered with a toothpick. Good for killing germs and brain cells or degreasing a car engine.

it's straight alcohol!! the traditional variety is made with gin or vodka mixed with vermouth. sometimes, bitters are added. it can be served over ice or chilled and straight up. garnishes include onions, olives, and a twist of lemon.
the trendy bars will serve a martini with the flavored vodkas. my fave is made with gin, straight up, with 2 onions.

It's actually 5 parts gin and 1 part dry vermouth for a regular traditional martini. If you aren't a big alcohol drinker, I would suggest getting one with a twist (JD of Scrubs' famed 'Appletini').

Either vodka or gin and Vermouth. Yes it is strong and it's not a sweet drink. I suppose it's similar to a vodka or gin and tonic, quite sour.

It's alcohol diluted with . . . ALCOHOL, either vodka or gin and a splash of vermouth.

Yes, they are VERY strong. After two, you can go to the dentist and get a cavity drilled without novocaine.
