It's a drug. You drink it. If it was liquid cocaine you might think twice. Why? Who cares about "every now & then' or 'rarely'? Nearly all of us have lost loved ones to drunk drivers. My mate's 16 year-old, president of his high school class, spent 9 months in children's hospital after he was hit and now, at 19, has no short-term memory and must repeat his senior year again. He will never be able to drive or do things for himself safely again. He gets lost easily, just walking from the water to his family.
Really, WHY? All other drugs that have the effects of alchol are illegal. Pot isn't as dangerous as alcohol but it's illegal. People drink, they drive, they maim and kill people; they go into rages and hurt those around them. If people were able to not drink in excess it would be a different story.
What kind of God would put such a heinous substance on the Earth?

*A Dane's sweetheart* - So children deserve to be maimed or killed for having the minds of children? My mate's nephew SHOULD have gone through what he did because another ADULT with 3 DUIs already under his belt smashed into the driver's side door of his car? Alcohol should be legal but crack shouldn't? Why? Think about it.
*Chance* - Let's get real here. You've asked a very small-minded question. No, I do not take Communion. The blood of Christ has caused more drunken driving accidents than I care to tell you. I never said I didn't have a drink, though. I have. It STILL disgusts me that it's legal. What messed-up crap.

*Veritas* - Is that an answer? Your free will thing? Should it be legal for us to hit people with our cars and kill them because of our "free will". If it's free will, then why is anything illegal. I think if you go deep within yourself you will find the answer and thus the truth. Veritas, indeed.
*Jiloth* You're religious, right? Who do you think gave man the perfect ingredients to make alcohol. Who created the hops? I myself know God didn't create it because I don't believe in God. Simple. You, on the other hand, do... and yet you only hold Him accountable to his 'good deeds'. That's pretty silly.
*Sword* I agree that it is a man-created substance. I was curious in regard to religious responses, which I knew I'd get a ton of.
*Firey* Legalizing medical marijuana is one thing. I enjoy a good j every now and then for my OWN purposes - not medical. It's difficult to get. Alcohol should be as well.

Prohibition didn't work because it didn't stay a law. There is no proof it would cause more deadly crime and we all know it would lessen it a a million-fold in the future. Really, people. It's OK because YOU drink it? Yeah, I know people will make moonshine. It will STILL be hard to get. People will protest. THEY'LL GET OVER IT. The stuff is too dangerous to be legal and it's few health benefits can be made into a vitamin or be prescribed in limited form by a trained doctor. Cocaine has some benefits but like alchol, the bad far outweighs the good.
I love you, Lokasenna. You see through the b.s. It doesn't mean you'll stop drinking (or that I'll never have another) but I'm so proud that you can see the crazy contradictions so clearly.
No, Da Mick, that was NOT my question. Please don't give me a whole ridiculous "well, if people can abuse alcohol and it's illegal then it should be illegal to have children too. PLEASE, BE LOGICAL.

5466Brad - It helps us deal with people? What does that mean. A heroin user could say the same exact thing.
I'm sorry. Is it not completely OBVIOUS in my question that people can do heroin in moderation too and that shouldn't make it any less legal. Believe me, I don't want the government controlling much, but making alcohol illegal would do me, you, and those we both love a service in safety.
*Kickors* Get real! I'm not talking about eating too many chocolate bars. I am talking about a DANGEROUS drug. How can so many people give such narrow-minded answers? Sugar does not put me in danger of homicide or manslaughter.
*LJ* The biggest disaster ever? Are you kidding? I don't CARE if people don't like it. I don't want them killing or maiming my loved ones and I. Some of you don't even know the second thing about Prohibition do you?
HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE EXCUSES?

XT, etc. - I feel I have made it quite clear that my God remark was made sardonically. I would apologize if I felt it wasn't completely obvious, but it is. And oh my GAWD! Did you actually say that God created weed and the devil created alcohol? Do you really believe such irrationality?

****An avatar does not a person make**** I am not a cop and I am certainly not a male.
I cannot BELIEVE so many Christians are saying "God didn't create it" as though that was even the point of my original question. IF you can't give my question a thoughtful answer then why bother answering?
Hey choka69 - I'm sure your God would be real happy with your ID name. Lovely. If God was in control he wouldn't ALLOW Satan to kill millions upon millions of innocent people. Again, if you believe in God, then where do you believe the ingredients in alcohol come from? Satan? Please. What a terrible excuse.
*KH* - Ben Franklin was an agnostic. He didn't believe in God.
*Tzadiq* - You must realize that you completely contradicted yourself, right? I mean, your bubble isn't THAT strong, is it? You call me godless and then tell me I'm blaming it on God. No. I'm not. If I was blaming it on God I wouldn't call on the people to make it illegal now, would I? God doesn't exist in my world. Get it?

Elise, thank goodness there are kids like you out there. You obviously have proven yourself to be more open-minded and intelligent then many of the so-called 'adult' responders. I applaud you. I'm still not a cop, though. Just liked the uniform. I wish older folks would listen to people like you, rather than just brushing them aside and choosing to remain ignorant. Hope you're having fun!

Back in old times wine was used as a drink because the water was not safe to drink.
There are alot of things that God put here on earth that are not good for us. It is just the balance.
I also think that alcohol should be illegal because people do not know how to act responsibly with it. Pot is alot different and has many medicinal effects. Our government is backwards.
I think if they put younger people in the congress and in the presidential seat then we would not have most of these kind of issues. Most young people agree on most levels.
But to answer the whole of your questions, I do not know why God puts those kinds of things here in the first place. I just figure that it is the balance of good and evil.

Well, I agree with you, but if we recall, prohibition didn't work. Crime rose to an all time high. Marijuana, in my opinion should be legalized. I have never smoked pot, nor do I drink, but I believe in a person's right to make their own decisions.
"What kind of God would put such a heinous substance on the Earth?"
--Good point. If it didn't exist, then we wouldn't have to worry about it.

Same God that put tornados, scorpions, pubic lice and alligators. Not God's fault. Why do people continue to allow it? There is an interesting question. Our species facility for denial is quite strong - there are many many things that do not make sense when examined closely, but are widely accepted. Many of these are 'social norms' - such as alcohol. I agree with you that alcohol is a much deadlier drug than some others.

Why blame God..I became a Christian 31 years ago and gave up drinking completely, but if you or I were to suggest the prohibicion of alcohol again, it would cause riots.
The USA does not want to follow God in any form and the reverse, they want to legalize drugs too.
Alcohol has it's place , disinfectant, back rub, but not drinking it as a recreation drug.. It is how we use it that is the problem, and why we think that we can not have fun without alcoholic drinks. I have more fun than ever without any drugs.

Many drugs are legal that we consume. And many foods which are not "drugs" can be and are bad for us. For example, caffeine is a drug which everyone consumes. Even if you try to avoid it, it's in many foods (like chocolate) naturally. Too much caffeine is bad for a person, but it can be taken in moderate amounts and be OK.
Same for sugar. Sugar is not even a drug, but it can and does kill people. This is why diabetes is the number one killer in the USA today, more than nicotine or alcohol. Diabetes was never a problem in the world until the production and use of refined sugar on a large scale.
So there are substances on this earth that we can enjoy, like caffeine, sugar, and alcohol; but if you overdo them they will be deadly.
Almost any food is deadly if you overdo it, anyway.

You blame God become some people abuse alcohol?
I blame you. People like you could drive a teetotaler to drink. Every beer or glass of wine or vodka collins I drink from now on I'm blaming on you. People like you make my brain hurt and I need something to dull the senses.
That last paragraph makes as much sense as your whole diatribe.
Why is it that the biggest bigots and craziest loons aren't us religious kooks but you godless self righteous hypocrites. You guys get more pathetic with each post.

True- some people have problems with alcohol, but I'm glad that the law doesn't punish those of us who can enjoy it very responsibly.
Sorry about your friend. That really is sad. I agree that penalties for drunk driving should be severe and that pot should be legal.

Alcohol is made by people. We take God's product and ferment it purposefully. And then we sell it as a lifestyle in advertisements.
Now, plants - like cannabis, poppies, and coca - were made by God. Get your facts straight: God would rather we be stoned than drunk driving.
Oh, but then you'll ask why God invented fermentation. God didn't. The devil did, to tempt us into drunk driving.

You know we tried to make it illegal here in the US, the biggest disaster ever. It didn't stop people from drinking. All it did was create an underground of criminal organizations. The same thing has happened when we have criminalized drug use. It didn't stop drugs it just made violent criminals out to exploit society in search of the easy buck..

Firstly, god had nothing to do with this -- or with anything else. Secondly, alcohol can be pleasant to use and has some beneficial health effects. The great experiment of outlawing it turned out to be a fiasco, and there is no need to repeat it.
