My husband would like to name our baby boy Shiraz. I am not against it as I know that there is also a city of Iran by that name. However, my main concern is that I have been informed from some people that Prophet Muhammed didn't like this name. Does any one has any religious background for this name. Please let me know ASAP. thanks

I'm not sure, but I *think* it's a variety of grape. You might Google it (type in "define: shiraz" and see) or check Wikipedia to be sure.

It might be unsuitable to name a child for a a kind of wine, given that Islam disallows wine...

Its a beautiful city in south of Persia/Iran.
I don't think anyone has named their kid Shiraz... and you guys would be the first.
And nope... since it wasn't a name then the Prophet didn't have a problem with it.
Maybe because back in those days Shiraz was the wine capital.

EDIT:
Are you sure he wants to name him Shiraz?
Cz I was looking at the Persian names for boys and I came across Shirzad which means brave and courageous... maybe he wants to name him Shirzad.

Shiraz is a beautiful city in Iran known for its rose gardens and the tomb of the great poet Hafiz. Oh and never mind what Muhammad's opinion of the name Shiraz is, go ahead and give your baby this beautiful name.
