My hair is kind of thick and pretty curly if I allow it to be (I straighten in a lot).

I've had the same cut for too long--Just below my shoulders, with long layers. Oh, and my hair only parts on the side.

I'm afraid to try side bangs, because they would curl too much. I also don't want it to be really really short. Thoughts???

Hmmm I don't know. I also have curly hair. I had my hair past shoulder length and all one length until about a week ago I went and got it cut in long layers. I must say, it has worked out so far. I love it. I don't think you should do any drastic changes because curls are unpredictable. The side bangs thing might not work out for your curly hair although I'm sure it would look awesome when you have it straight. If you really want to do something different, why not just get your layers cut a little shorter than usual.

i think you should try side bangs just to see. and maybe for a fun summer look you could get your hair a little shorter for a change. maybe just above your shoulders. it will grow out again eventually if you dont like it.

Just above the shoulder would be good for the summer!

Something a bit shorter & shaggier? http://matrix.com/find_your_hair_style/short/style_03.aspx?scroll=870

or
let it grow longer?
