Wonderful! Sacramento is a great place to live. If you can afford some of the apartments around Sacramento State University you'll find lots of young single women near-by. If you can afford to live in mid-town, also known as Lavender Heights because of the quaint shops, art museums, and great restaurants, that an area worth checking out. I had some architectural history classes at UCDavis (17 miles away) and the professor of the classes lives there.

Sacramento is very expensive. It was just ranked one of America's top 10 overpriced cities. If you have a job and will be making enough $$ to live on your own I would not suggest living downtown. After 5pm the city is deserted as all the state workers live in the burbs. Bums, druggies and prostitutes are the only people on the streets. If you can afford it I would suggest you get a nice condo in the burbs. Carmichael and Fair Oaks are nice (not actually in Sacramento but they are located in Sacramento County) and so is Gold River. Old Fair Oaks is a very pleasant neighborhood which has a little downtown village and is situated close to the American River. The area of Carmichael where Jesuit High School is located is very nice (and expensive) too. If you lived there you would be close to a lot of nice restaurants and cool places to shop.

Midtown, obviously. The rest of Sacramento (including greater Sacramento) is a depressing (sub)urban sprawl. Midtown, on the other hand, has a historic vibe with all its Victorians, etc. Everything is relatively close together, and a bike is seriously all you need to get around. This is where all the interesting shops, coffee houses, and bars are located.

I'd stay around the Sacramento Area. If you head north from there - you get into Yuba City, Marysville area and sadly that is not the best place to live

Midtown is pretty cool---
BUT I'm surprised no one has said Natomas yet.
Natomas is really pretty, and its close to highway 5 and highway 80, and pretty close to the 50. And Natomas has every store you could possibly want. Ikea, walmart, michaels, hooters, mattress discounters, banks, hella food places, and like 10 starbucks.
Housing is more pricey, but they're newer and pimped out.

I would suggest Downtown/Midtown or East Sac. (Folsom Blvd./J street area) There are lots of nice restaurants, bars, cafes and stores. Oh and cute girls too! :) Everything is pretty much within walking distance.
