If you like the outdoors, then I can make a couple of suggestions. The first is local and would be to either hike or take a bike ride along the American River Parkway. This park runs from downtown Sacramento, all the way to Folsom lake, if you get lucky you will see all sorts of wildlife from snakes to deer.

Non local choices would include a drive up to Ice House above Folsom, it is a beautiful area with lots of lakes and hiking and camping opportunities. This is about an hour and a half each way.

Another choice would be a drive to the coast and the beaches along the Northern California coast. This is about 2 hours away. Be warned that beaches in Northern California can be cold and foggy, unlike their Southern California cousins.

My last suggestion would be a road trip to Yosemite National Park, but be warned this is about a 6 hour drive each way, but if you have never seen it it is well worth the time. I have done day trips there many times and if you leave early enough you will have a chance to see most of the major highlights.

Enjoy your stay.

Bring your bikes and ride along the bike trail which winds alongside the American River. You can ride it all the way from Folsom Lake to Downtown Sac which is at least 25 miles. It is very scenic and fun. Don't forget to wave at the prisoners when you ride by Folsom Prison.

Take your kids to the capital. Maybe if you're lucky you'll see Ahnold coming out of a meeting. Another poster mentioned the train musuem, that is fun also. There are two great malls in the Sacramento area: Arden Fair mall and the K Street mall. Both of those places are cool if you like to shop. The library downtown is another cool place to spend an afternoon reading, studying, serfing the internet, whatever.

There is also the art musuem. I can't believe I forgot to mention Cal Expo and the zoo! Cal Expo aslo hosts the state fair every year. Maybe something is going on at Arco Arena which you could take your kids to. I'm sure there is a website that lists events.

Hi Cindy,
I just wrote a long list of places to go in Sacramento, for another asker, so do a search for it, you'll get lots there. As BigD said, Fairytale Town is not to be missed, and the Sacramento Zoo is right across the street. This is the area I was raised in, and it's great for kids.
Another place to take kids in July is Waterworld in the CalExpo grounds. You can also go to the City of Sacramento website, it's huge and thorough. Historic Old Sacramento is a must see as well.
