I have this porblem with my dog. She has ear infections since she has dropped ears and loves water. YOu really want to take care of the situation because the ear canal can and will swell up so that you can't treat it without giving the dog a steriod to take down the swelling and apply either an antibiotic or a yeast inhibitor depending on which is the culprit. Also constant vigorous head shaking can cause a hematoma (large bood blister) to form on the outside ear which will lead to a necessary surgery to remove. Expensive and not plesant for the dog or you wallet. Ask me how I know this!

My dog has ear problems all the time. Try to see if you can take a look inside but DO NOT put anything in your dogs ear b/c you could hurt the ear or pop an ear drum. Take it to the vet right away. It could be anything from an infection or some kind of irritation. The vet will tell you exactly what it is, and probably give ear drops or some kind of medicine. My dog has had several ear problems, but after the vet and the medicine, she has always gotten better!

He may have ear mites, or an infection. Check to see if the ear looks dirty, especially if you see something that looks like coffee grounds - that's ear mites. (My cats get 'em sometimes.) Also, check to see if there's a sour or rotten smell coming from the ear, as that could indicate a bacterial infection. Is the ear hot or especially tender? Those would also indicate infection. For those, you'd want to visit a vet.
However, if it's ear mites, that's no big deal. Get some boric acid (from the first aid section of your local Wal Mart) and mix it with water into a paste. Put this into the ear and moosh the outside of the base of the ear around in order to work the paste in. Leave it in and repeat in a few days if necessary. Ear mites are yucky and itchy but they're not scary-bad.

He could have a bug in his ear, or even a bug bite. Is he scratching, too? Does he have ffod/environment allergies?
Get him to the vet ASAP! If it's not an object in his ear, have your vet do a blood panel to check for allergies. My dog has had 3 ear surgeries because he developed hematomas from head-shaking (he developed allergies when we moved to a different state). I clean his ears everyday/every other day, but these things have appeared literally overnight.
Good luck! Hope it turns out okay...I know how scary that can be.

Your dog could possibly have a severe or mild ear infection or something in the ear that can not be seen to the naked eye. I would suggest that you take your Lab to the vet for further inspection of the ear. Hope all turns out well.

It sounds like an ear infection. Clean his ear really good with a cotton ball and some hydrogen peroxide and if you get a lot of black/brown gunk and it smells then you need to have the vet look at him and get some ear drops.

Yes, I would definitely take him to the vet. It could just be an ear infection, but then again it could be something much worse like a stick or a parasite. The longer you wait to take him in the more pain he will feel and the longer it will take to heel.

I suggest that you have a vet check his ears. He could have a yeast or bacterial infection going on. The only way to know for sure is a smear that is looked at under the microscope. If this is the case, usually it is treated with ear drops...Good Luck!

Take him to the vet. My dog did that and developed a hematoma that required surgery. Could be a foreign object such as a dangerous foxtail or simple allergies that can be treated. Plus, you may not be able to visualize the object, dog's ear canals are different than humans.

Sounds like he might have ear mites, or a possible ear infection. Either way, both have to be treated with meds....definately go to the vet
