what i am mad about is the fact that i wasnt told it was for a parasite they only said they found nothing at the time but put him on it anyway. i do my homework when it comes to medicine. they lied to me what the meds were for for and i feel we should have been notified! they should have said this is for a parasite infection which they did not, they just said as a precaution--it was the vets aid not he actual vet.

Check your paperwork that you signed when you left him at the vet to see if there is anything in there about administering medications and/or emergencies. Yes I feel they should have called and gotten your permission before giving him anything. They may have given him the med as a preventative but call the vet and ask to meet with him/her to discuss it and ask that your boarding fee be returned because they did not inform you and since the med isn't FDA approved ask whether they will cover any future medical costs if something should happen because of this.

Metronidazole is a very, very commonly used medication for dogs. It is safe.Vets have been using it for a long time. It is used often times if a dog has blood in stool or vomit. While the vet should have called and got your approval before medicating (although it depends on the contract you signed..if you signed one that gave permission to treat the dog if it was necassary then no) the meds won't cause any problem with the dog and likely prevented a more seriosu issue from happening.

Also just because your dog never had that problem before doesn't mean it didn't or wouldn't happen, especially in a stressful situation, change in routine, etc..which boarding is.

While the internet can be a useful tool it can also give false info or misinterpreted info..it should NEVER be used to diagnose an issue etc.

Well I would be mad at the vet to ,but see when a dog throws up or spits up any blood, or has any bloodly diaria which I no your dog didnt have both . See those things can be dangerouse for your baby. sometimes with those two things you cant find anything wrong at all but there is something and if they did nothing with something like that and your dog got worse there would be no fixing it.I have seem a couple dogs on medronodizol wich another name would be flagle for these reasons .The only other option they would have had if they didnt try that stuff would be to call you and see if you wanted to do a barrium test or altasound .by the way the dogs I have seen on it and recovered and the problem didnt come back .There is alot of dogs in my family so I have seen alot. Also alot of times if you are one of the lucky ones you wont find nothing wrong later. Most of the time they will use the metronodizole with amoxi or other antibiotics and tagment or sacrafate all together. It sounds like they were waiting for you in a way.I can see why your upset though.

My Dog is also on Metronidazole. Metronidazole is a antibiotic that is commonly used to treat bacterial infections and it can cause upsets to the GI tract and stomach problems. My dog is on this for a lot of bacteria which was found in his intestine along with a 2nd antibiotic. Mine hasn't had no bad effects and hes doing very well on the medication. However your dog vomited up blood which is very concerning in itself. I would seek a 2nd opinion at a different vet and have the vomited up blood investigated. It sounds to me like the Metronidazole didn't agree with your poodle and has upset his tummy a lot - but if your dog was vomiting up blood PRIOR to going on the medication then this might be why the medication was prescribed. But contact your vet and find out in explicit detail WHY your pooch was put on this medication and what results made the vets think it was a suitable medication to be on. This medication is very good and I dont think your vet would of prescribed this medication unless he had reason to. PS mine is also a poodle but a minature. Good luck.

First, you should probably call another type of vet or the FDA itself and hear from a doctor or someone who is qualified to find out this drug isn't FDA approved. The internet source is most likely reliable but you should make sure just in case. I think that it's kind of illegal for a doctor to give your dog or even a human medicine without consent. He should have called you first to get your consent. If it has been atleast 1 or 2 weeks and nothing has happened, then your dog may be ok. But if you notice anything strange or weird in your dog's behavior or his health, go to a second vet, tell them about the medicine the other vet gave, and if the other vet says it's caused by the medicine, i would hire a lawyer. Hopefully your dog is ok, I have a dog myself and I hate it when she gets sick.

We board dogs at the hospital where I work, and we require a signature stating that if the pet becomes sick, we will treat it accordingly. Your dog may have developed some stress condition, which could account for the blood. Metrondizole is a very commonly used drug in practice and is very helpful for intestinal problems. Sometimes the vets can't reach people when they are on vacation, and it would be wrong to wait to treat the pet as it could become worse. I think your vet acted correctly.

Usually, when you leave a pet with the vet for boarding, they have you sign a consent form for them to treat the dog, in case of illness or injury. Just because a drug isn't approved for certain uses, doesn't mean that it is harmful or doesn't work. It is fairly common for drugs to be used for off label purposes. Many times, there is no alternative.
Metronidazol is commonly used, in dogs, to treat infections of Giardia, which causes G.I. upset. It is also proven to be effective when a definitive diagnosis, of Giardia, can not be made. It's possible that your dog exhibited signs of Giardia, so your vet chose to treat it as such when he could find no other cause.

I wouldn't be too concerned, unless it is a really shady facility. My dog was throwing up and I brought him to our vet (whom is amazing) he told me that dogs pick up bacterial infections from other dogs...even on walks, etc...he gave him the same med...it's for anaerobic (which means the bacteria can survive without needing oxygen...harder to kill) bacterial infections and certain parasites. It very likely that he could have gotten sick from another dog...they wouldn't give him meds that would be harmful too him. Alot of meds are not even FDA approved for us...I give my dog ammodium, bufferin, and benadryl. if you don't trust this vet I would take him to another, but I'm sure they would agree with your previous vet. Good luck

metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections. The vet should have called you, however he was probably just taking a precaution. You would have been more angry if you came home to a dead dog! I've seen it used on dogs, cats and horses.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
