Not many since one of the mormon beliefs is that black skin is evil and people of sin. Generally when you exclude a race that race doesn't like to join you.

There aren't very many in the US, but there are missions in Africa. Most are illiterate converts who have not be exposed to the church's past and recent history.
Considering the church's record and written statements regarding blacks (Everyone open your Book of Mormon and Journal of Discourses), it's not difficult why a literate African American would pass on mormonism and Utah.
Rynok:
"Shall I tell you the Law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is DEATH ON THE SPOT. This will ALWAYS be so.” Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 10, p.110, 1863. So, the Prophet of God was shootin' from the hip, eh?

Yes, there are, and have been since the very beginnings (not, as one person claimed, only since 1965; I'm part Native American myself, through my mother's side several generations back, so I can assure you that particuar statement's quite incorrect). It is not correct that the Church "changed" the words of any earlier prophets by allowing blacks to join the Church or receive full priesthood & temple blessings (starting in 1979) - it's always been understood it was only temporary, and that the ordination to the priesthood (and, by extension, all temple blessings) would eventually be given to blacks. (Of course the anti-Mormons who try to use that agaisnt the Mormon Church "conveniently" forget to mention *that* particular detail, 'cause it'd destroy their entire argument.)

Yeah, there are some black mormons. Evander Holyfield is a bishop in the mormon church. If you don't believe me go look in the archives in the Salt Lake Tribune Newspaper. pEACE

The church in Africa is booming and has little discrimination over there. They dont even use the nickname "Mormon" but know us by the real name The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I know a lot of black members. I also grew up in new Zealand where most of the church members are polynesian.

Oh yea, when I was a Mormon, I went to a fireside meeting ( a youth event) and the first black Bishop (pastor, preacher, priest) spoke at the event and was proud to be the first. I also know an black ex-mormon, he said the families are forever got him hooked, and he never knew about the war in heaven or the Mark of Cain or Ham's wife was black stuff until much later.

Yes there are black members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is true that in the beginning of the church they were not allowed to have certain positions or callings in the church that other men held, so they didn't feel very welcomed. Then in the 1970's the Church changed their position about allowing them to have all the same callings and privileges as everyone else. The Church is growing and is very large in African nations of Ghana, and Nigeria. Also there are several black members that hold high positions in the Church today. The numbers are few, but are growing and are welcomed.

I would believe there are Mormons who are black. I have visited the Mormon Temple in Hawaii. The Mormons believe that Christ has visited other people after he was risen. Like North America, Africa, etc.

There are many black members to the church. We have large numbers in Africa. There are even three temples in Africa. The ward I am currently attending has four black families. I attended Brigham Young University Hawaii and came in contact with many black members. There are also large numbers of Pacific Islanders. My husband is black and a member of the Church. I am white and also a member.

There are some, but not many. One of the larger mistakes that LDS made was the exclusion of blacks, and they've been laboring mightily to correct the situation for a number of years. The trouble is that they only figured out that they incorrectly interpreted their literature on the subject sometime in the 1970's, I believe, but I'm not sure of the date or the details.
There's certainly nothing in LDS doctrine that would seem to exclude blacks or any other group; it's very much an American religion.

Do you want to see a black Mormon? check out my MySpace page! http://www.myspace.com/kimberly2930 I AM!!! did you see my pic?
I am not African American, I am Hispanic and have dark skin and I have NEVER ever been discriminated or something in the Mormon church or by a LDS member. My ward (which is in Spanish) is in the same building with an English speaking ward and there are black people there and no one is discriminated.
AHHH! and when I went to do baptism for the deaths one of the ones that was baptizing us for the death people was black, he also confirmed for the deaths. Duh, there is no racism in church and for those ones who says that blacks still don't have priesthood YES THEY DO!!! if they don't is because they don't want to.
***PLEASE PLEASE people, help me with this one http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ak7yjhAHGBoR6JN9ydpRMUbsy6IX?qid=20070515204248AAKYw34 yeah yeah, it kinds of has to do with Mormons... and students too!!! :)
