1. Ask your parents if they know some merchants in the neighborhood who might give you a job. They could talk to them on your behalf.
2.Volunteer somewhere and then go on job interviews in places you would like to work. Tell them you volunteer. Volunteering shows that you are interested in helping people and that you are responsible.
3. Find out where your friends work and apply for a job in those places.
Good Luck

Start checking out the local malls, swimming pools (life guard), YMCA (lifeguard/trainer/assistant)....
There are also companies like Eagle Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc, that hire teens for seasonal help. I suggest get pounding the pavement because there are going to be other teens wanting jobs too the choicie jobs go fast.
Or if you want more flexibility, get your mom & dads lawn mower and mow lawns during the summer, clip hedges, help clean out garages,etc....Let your neighbors know and make flyers (before so you can hand them the flyer) you'd be surprised how many people start looking around and call you up to help with stuff like that. You probably could get $35 easy for one reasonable size mowing. Even cleaning the gutters, weeds, repairing stuff....like little holes in the wall....which is fairly easy....with some putty, taping or mesh....you can do stuff like that as well as painting.
Just decide what you want to do, and what kind of flexibility you want in your work. Remember if you work for a retailer you have to be on time, dressed and groomed neat, and no playing around. And usually have to work evening, weekends, and holidays.
Good luck!

Learn how to correctly fill out a job application, make a resume and cover letter. You would be amazed how an employer looks over these for correct spelling and punctuation. Make sure you give at least 3 personal references and that none of them are related to you. Make yourself appear like you are willing to learn different tasks, as well as the position you are applying for. A good beginner job would be like a stocker position at Walmart or a bagger for a local grocery store. A job at a movie rental store would also be good. Try to think of any experience you might have, such as answering phones, filing, typing, computer experience, etc. Use all your assets on your resume. At the interview, make sure you are neat and clean, dressed appropriately - khaki slacks and nice shirt. No t-shirts and torn jeans. Nice tennis shoes are fine. Make yourself look presentable. It's the little things you say and do that get you noticed by the interviewer. Smile a lot, and be friendly! Good luck to you on your search for your first job.

Look for jobs that do not require experience. That is what you do in your teen years. Car hops, fast food, car washes and farmers will hire 16 year olds. You might also look at summer day camps.

One word. Connections. Who do you know that has a job? If you have a relative or friend, they could put in a good word for you.
Most 16 year olds don't have work experience. You could always get your certification and become a lifeguard.

To be honest, LIE! Make up something that was a previous job and just tell them that the business went bankrupt or was out of town! The previous job info is rarely verified. Be prepared with good answers in case you are asked about the previous job.

Apply at groceries stores, restaurants, and fast food places. These businesses are usually willing to hire 16 year olds and are usually very flexible with hours for younger employees.

My best advise is to just jump right into something. The quicker you get working the sooner you will find what you really enjoy. Work harder than others and be more flexible and more dedicated then raises and promotions will follow

a job like at a grocery store or ice cream shop, pizza place, anything like that will hire with no expirience. they know their job is simple and it's perfect for kids, so you don't need a degree in anything to bag groceries or scoop ice cream. just put in an app saying i'm a hardworker, do good in school , would like to earn money to save for a car and college, ect. they will probally hire you no quesitons.
