Mark 3:28 “I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, 29 but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.” 30 He told them this because they were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.”
Matthew 12:31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

I believe that the essence of the unpardonable sin is a willful and enlightened rejection of God. I believe the first being to commit this sin was Lucifer. He lived in heaven, close to God, and knew the goodness and love of God; yet he willfully and arrogantly defied God and rebelled against Him, seducing one third of the angels with him.
I believe an unsaved man commits this sin when the Holy Spirit of God begins to plead with him, drawing him to Christ, showing him the way of salvation, and that man realizes in his heart that it is God dealing with him; yet he stubbornly and willfully refuses to repent and humble himself before God and accept the work of God's grace within him.
I believe even a truly born again saved person is capable of being drawn away into this sin. I don't believe it happens over night; but I believe by continuous willful indulgence in sin and a refusal to repent and confess sin even when one knows that God is striving with them and leading them to repentance, even a believer can drift away to the point where they can actually deny Christ and become settled enemies of God. I am told certain leaders of some of the most anti-God movements and organizations in the world today were former believers who gradually hardened their hearts against the dealings of the Holy Spirit and finally completely rejected and repudiated God.
You see, it is the Holy Spirit of God who deals with us directly - Spirit to spirit; and when we refuse to yield to Him we cut ourselves off from the only One who can save us and keep us in the Life of God.

The case of the "unpardonable sin / unforgivable sin" or "blasphemy of the Holy Spirit" in the New Testament is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and in Matthew 12:22-32. The term blasphemy may be generally defined as "defiant irreverence." We would apply the term to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading things relating to God. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying Him some good that we should attribute to Him. This case of blasphemy however is a specific one, called "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32 the Pharisees, having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that the Lord was possessed by the demon "Beelzebub" (Matthew 12:24). Now notice that in Mark 3:30 Jesus is very specific about what exactly they did to commit "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit."
This blasphemy then has to do with someone accusing Jesus Christ (in person, on earth) of being demon-possessed. There are other ways to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, but this was "THE" blasphemy that was unpardonable. This means that this unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today because Jesus Christ is not on earth but seated at the right Hand of God; however, the Holy Spirit still accomplishes supernatural things through His servants. Although there is no unpardonable sin today, we should always keep in mind there is an unpardonable state-the state of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in unbelief. Remember, John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life." The only condition when someone would have no forgiveness is if that someone is not among the 'whoever believes in Him.'"

This is a rather tricky question you've asked and I can't pretend to know the whole answer. I don't think anyone really does. I think though that when we blaspheme against the Spirit, we despair of hope in the forgiveness of God. The Spirit gives us grace and through grace we are forgiven. So, probably, when we blaspheme the Spirit, we are closing ourselves off from God's forgiveness. We are, in effect, not allowing him to forgive us. If you are familiar with C.S. Lewis, in the Last Battle, Aslan tries to make the dwarfs realize that they are in paradise, not a crummy stable. But they refuse to believe Him. They, as I see it, are blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
I hope that this sheds some light on the subject. It is not so much that the committer of this sin can not be forgiven as much as they refuse to be forgiven and thus are unable to be forgiven.

Blasphemous against the Holy Spirit of God.
That is, to insult, slander, injure the reputation, attack and say untrue things. Cursing God or using abusive and cutting language about Him, His name, or His Word (Lev. 24:16, Rom. 2:24).
The Unpardonable Sin is a sin beyond forgiveness (Matt. 12:31-32 and Ex.8:32). The person who blasphemes the Holy Spirit chooses to reject Christ. That person's heart become so hard that it is dead to God.
If you have done something so bad and you are worried about God's forgiveness, that is an indication that you have not committed the unpardonable sin. You can be forgiven.
Something a lot of people have been doing on this forum.

What the verse means is attributing to Satan (giving him the credit) what is the work of the Holy Spirit. People who do that commit the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and their sin is unforgivable.
If you interpret this verse in the situation Jesus was in when he said that, you will come to this interpretation. The Scribes and Pharisees were attributing the miracles of Jesus to Satan. The verse you refer to is what Jesus said in response to their accusation
I know of a religious group that says that the miracles at Lourdes and other shrines were the work of Satan. This is a good example of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
Peace and blessings!

This is my belief. I have heard people say the Holy Ghost isn't real, but they have never had it. That is saying it out of sheer ignorance and God forgives that. But the bible clearly states that blasphemy is an unforgivable sin. That is when you KNOW the Holy Ghost is real and choose to deny it anyway. I don't believe you could ever get forgiveness if you deny it after you have known it to be true.

No, no. God speaks to man via the Holy Spirit. When God speaks to a man (through the Holy Spirit) , that man has to do something with that message. He may "feel" that God is telling him what to do or not to do, and he obeys- Good. But if that man says -"I do not know this voice I'm hearing, I will not listen. That man has rejected God. It is God-through the Holy Spirit-that convicts us or sin, when we reject that and accept the temptation to continue to do wrong-we have accepted Satan and rejected God. If, when, the Holy Spirit gives up on your continual disobedience-God will not speak to you again. He had withdrawn His Holy Spirit from you because you have rejected it or blasphemed it. There is no hope left for you.

When you totally deny God and His existence. Try to convince others of the same. Sense being a Christian means you believe in God an Jesus and the Holy Spirit, How can you be denying Him?

Given the paradoxical verses, what the Bible implies that is that those who commit such a sin no longer desire to come to genuine faith in Christ.
Consider Heb 6:4-6 "It is impossible for those who have once been .... if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance." The idea is that once a person falls away in this sense it will be impossible to bring that person to repentance.
I have met many Christians concerned that they had committed the unpardonable, but I tell them all the same - NO THEY HAVEN'T. For if they had, they would not repent.

Ive been asking the same question for years and this is the conclusion i came up with.you have to know the holy spirit before you came blaspheme against it.the holy spirit guides you to God and if you know for 100% its talking to you and and you still say get lost i want nothing to do with you even though i know you are real, that's the unforgivable sin.like if you're drowning and someone comes by to save you,but you tell them to go away,well..you're going to drown.
