Sometimes because they are in such a hurry. I have never been guilty of doing this myself, because I would never want anyone to treat me this way. Think about it, they are coming into a store that they probably didn't want to come to in the first place, buy something they probably didn't need to spend hard earned money on, so they are hurrying as fast as they can, throwing the $ at you. They don't want to spend the time trying to pick up the money, they just want the money handed to them so that they can get the he*l out of there. By no means do I think they should get away with it, but that is people plain and simple. Some don't know that they are doing that rude behavior. I bet that if you taped them, they would be ashamed. Oh, I don't believe it is because you are black, ask around, everyone has a horror story about the cashier and the customer. Sad fact is, you are going to have to get over it or quit your job to find something better suited. People will not change. They might not say hi because they have had something devastating happen in their life that day and are dazed. Maybe people don't like happy cashiers or happy greeters...they might realize how sad their life is and would rather have everyone else sad instead of seeing joy around the corner...sad but true....

Some people are just rude in general and it has nothing to do with you being black. When I worked in the pharmacy I had alot of customers who were rude, and they came in all shapes, sizes and colours, and I am caucasian. I just passed it off as they were not feeling well, or were in a rush, or just having a bad day. I try not to take people being rude personally. I hope you have some nice customers to make up for it. I know I did. Have nice day!

When I was a cashier I had the same problem. (I'm a white woman) So I started doing the same thing back....I wouldn't hand them their change, I would just put it on the counter in front of them. When the few asked my why, I said, "Oh, I thought you had a fear of touching people since YOU didn't hand the money to me and I thought it's the way you wanted it."

Yes it is because you are black. Da.You must give off something to trigger the attitude from them. I usually don't have a problem I can usually relate to the cashier and know that alot of the time there is just rude people in general. I find that alot of the time, African American (which totally goes against the whole genre of latitude and longitude or cultures and what they choose to be called) people give off an attitude that sometime is taken the wrong way. Even if they aren't aware of it themselves at times. They either roll the eyes, or tisk tisk sort of way about them. I dont' find it happens much with the older and more mature ones, but the younger the kids .You can bet it happens. And you will find that is happens more with the females than the males. But you can't just pile it up on just them soley. It goes on in every culture and race. And it is a matter of choice.Whether in behavior or thought. That is just the way the world is. And its up to you to learn to deal with these sort of issues that occur in your type of occupation.Hope this answers you question.

Believe me, its not because you are black. I am a decent looking white woman and people are like that to me also. Its just you only have to get a short glimpse of these people's day (and thank god for that) They are probably like that to everyone, all day long. You are just anyone to them and they don't care what you think. Just still try and be friendly to them, maybe you can turn their day around. As for some of them, some people are just freakin' rude, take it in stride and know that you were nice and that they are the ones with the issues. There are always going to be people like that no matter where you work OR what color your skin is. HAVE A NICE DAY!!!

one thing my parent's taught me years ago is that when you are on a date or out with friends, you can tell a lot about that person by the way he or she treats a waiter or waitress or really anyone in the public. that is so true, and when it comes to your question, i have to say it is the same.
i used to manage a chain of stores in california and one of them was in a very exclusive neighborhood in san francisco, the marina district. anyways, a great deal of our customers were super rude, and acted like they were gods gift to society. one of my coworkers said, "these people have an inflated sense of entitlement" and that was so true.
but what do you take from that? i told my employees, yes these people can be total *******, but think about it for a second, happy people treat others with respect and miserable people treat other people with disrespect. so really just stop and think how sorry their lives truly are that they feel the need to be so rude to others. then, you can smile and KNOW that you are in a better place than they are.
good luck and remember, kill them with kindness!! it will eat at them!!

No it's not your race it's their attitude. Just do what you gotta do with a big smile, you won't be doing this the rest of your life and your karma will be saved. These people think that service people should serve them and like it. The rudeness is absolutely unnecessary any one reading this what if it were your daughter being treated like the help???? Thank you takes no time at all.

I think you're assuming too much by assuming this is a racial thing. It may not be.
"Hi" is rude, or so they taught me in the Flamingo casino when I worked there. And "Have a nice day" is old and tired.
Do your job, smile at everyone. And those who are rude to you.... don't think they're racist, Just consider that they're rude or tired.
Say "Hello" and smile. And feel okay about the rude ones. No reason to take it personally.

I am white and I spent 11 years as a Booking Office Clerk on the London Underground (subway system) and I can assure you that rudeness in the way you describe cuts across all racial barriers and social classes. A middle-aged white guy in his pinstripe suit and bowler hat can be just as rude as the rough-looking Jamaican dude that might be next in line. It isn't necessarily because you're black BUT on the other hand I am shocked by some of the racist sentiments expressed in Yahoo! Answers and it does appear that racial hatred is still widespread in the US more than in the UK

Look here I'm a waitress and I'm white and people are really rude to me sometimes. I'm the one that has to hear all of the bitching if something is wrong or they don't like something. Why are you bringing race into this anyway-people are always gonna be rude-in ever color and race. It's 2007-people don't care about anybody else but themselves.
