I think the word you heard was "Cucuy" which is a Mexican idiom for monster or a way to express irrational fear. The origin of the word Cucuy comes from Portuguese forklore, "Coco" which also may be the origin of forklore like the "Headless Horse Man" and the "Boogieman". In Mexico, this monster is shapeshifting and many times appears dragon-like or as a hairy beast.

Generally, people have no idea of the origin of the word. They start to scream it out because they saw a snake or something, got scared and need help.

Cucoy?? Never heard of it. Sure you spelled it right?

The closest thing I've heard is "cocuyo", the Puerto Rican equivalent to "firefly"
