After watching the movie (when it came out) I began to wonder if this could actually happen. It makes sense to me. I just want other people's input. Thanks.

With the torrid hurricane seasons, the increase in F4 and F5 tornadoes, the long droughts raising fire-hazard levels throughout counties and states, and the overall reduction in the polar ice cap, I'd have to say it is possible. In fact, it seems like a rather logical progression as to what events "could" cause the next Ice Age.

It could happen but not how the movies said it would with those weird hurricanes that were freezing cold. Heres how.
OK. The Gulf Stream in the North Atl antic basically gives Europe and northeastern North America its warm weather. (look at a map most of Europe lines up with CANADA yet has a warming climate). Now cold water is heavier than warm water so it sink to the bottom of the Gulf Stream while the warm water is on top of it. If the glaciers melt all that cold water form the nor thern glaciers will flow into it disrupting the balance. Then all the cold water would circulate around due to the Coriolis Effect and cause an ice age.

yes and no. Yes that stuff "could" happen, but not like that.

The most likely scenaio for something "like" that happening are two things.

1. 2-3km or larger asteroid impact at sea or land.
2. An eruption of the Yellowstone volcano.

Both of these events will probably occur in the next 2 to 30 thousand years naturally unless we took steps to prevent them.

1. We could deflect an asteroid - even a fairly large one, if we had enough notice from scientists/astronomers. There are many web-sites on this concept.

2. An eruption could be averted by taking the "bullet" slowly, by putting geothermal release systems in place, we could control the amount of pressure in the caldera and eventually reduce it so that the caldera was nothing more than a regional danger. However we'd still be impacted by the release of all those volatile chemicals into the atmosphere, (sulphur acids , sulphur dioxide and CO2 and weird hydrocarbons galore) unless we found a way to break them down or combine/process them into something less harmful, temperature would negatively affected but the ash released would be minimal so we would still have sunlight at least but temperatures would go down for anywhere from 10-50 years - temporarily.

The immediate aftermath of an impact from a large meteor would be similar to the movie perhaps if it landed near or at the poles - but that's the least likely way the earth would be hit since most of the "stuff" that could do that kind of damage, in the solar system is along the same axis as our equator, and so would hit either land on eurasia, africa or the americas or at sea somewhere.

With a water impact, a tsunami dozens or hundreds of feet high could result wiping out life on every front facing landmass coastal floodplain inland for about 20 or 30 miles if not more.

Also billions of tons of water would be instantly vaporised into the atmosphere so, it would rain or snow (depending on the season) more or less continuously for weeks or months. It's very probable that the biblical story of Noah, is in some way a recollection of a similar event happening to mankind when we were just simple tribesmen and herding farmers, since the myth is shared by most all of the civilizations on earth.

Actually there was a lot about that movie that was true, that was what made the movie so shocking. The producers did a lot of research before putting that movie together, and when it aired on TV it scared everyone so much because the entire idea seemed like it all could happen. Of course at that time that USSR was a major power, and now we no longer have to worry about them, but there are enough other countries that we still have to worry about. But, yes, a bomb could go off and blow us up and basically blow most of us up and leave the world unlivable.

I do believe it will happen. It may not be happening in our time or close to it. It may come about in a few hundred years. We are slowly seeing mild effects of global warming currently. Our polar caps are melting. The more they melt the higher the sea rises. This will then cause people to have to move inland because the shores will be underwater. Our storms will get worse. Just take a look at our hurricanes now! They are becoming more and more powerful.

You should read the book by Whitley Streiber and Art Bell; they give a good explanation of the theory. I believe what they state happened in the movie could happen, but I don't think the damage would be that bad. If the Gulf Stream current stopped flowing because of cold water from melted ice in the Arctic, the US and Western Europe would be in big trouble though. I certainly hope that it never happens.

We should do all that we can to reduce our greenhouse emissions in the US without damaging our economy. Check out the sites below for more info.

Yes it can I think it can and will happen
there will be little to non warnings though think about it remember that mamoth that was unfrozen the food was proserved in his stomach he hadn't even digested it yet when the ice age froze it solid and it was a summer flower that is how quick it changed I watched that movie and it was a BIG shock but I am so glad it was made people need to know what we are doing to the earth!

most definitely why cause of global warming. it is actually a new ice age caused by the melting of the ice pole especially the north. Why the re is a current carrying warm water warm wind and worst of the motion is cause by it salty nature the ice cap melts increasing water level (flood) as well as making the water less salty. stopping its flow the would reduce the warmness transferred from the equator to north America most of Europe and Asia causing a second ice age that might last for as long as 2 centuries.scary it might seam but i am not worried cause i have easy access to Nigeria a nation close to the equator but presently in the state believe me if i tell you that i am 13 this is what history and discovery channel does.

A lot of the things in that movie were dramatized. BUT if you watch the movie The Innconivent Truth" (the movie that Al Gore did) then you will see that global warming will happen if we don't take care of the planet...Make sure that you check out that Innconvient Truth movie. It will make you think.

Not like that, but the next ice age (some what like movie) will happen probably soon. (within the next couple thousand years). You can't believe all the global warming media though- that isn't the main cause of everything so don't spaz. Nature is natural things happen
