My light gray couch is infront of the wall. My accent colors are red, olive green, and espresso colored wood furniture. I can paint, but do not have the flexability to put up something permanent.

I know you people are creative... any ideas? :-)

Put up things that are important. On my wall, I have paintings that my artist friend did for me, cards I've recieved, poseters of my favorite movies and bands, and so on.

You say your wall is long, not tall, so what you need to do is break up the length and change the proportioning of the wall.
Avoid a lot of little things ie: small multi picture collages along the way. This just lengthens the wall by drawing your eye across it. Opt for larger pieces of art, and try to "anchor" them over a piece of furniture like the sofa or a table or bookcase. This creates a "blocking" of these items that start to section off the long wall into more visually pleasing units.
Also you can create a larger "block" with a smaller picture simply by painting a larger rectangle or square, the same shape as the picture, in an accent colour on the wall behind it. You then hang the picture in the centre of it and you have effectively enlarged the art. ( ie: if you have an 11 x 14" picture, paint a 23 x 26" rectangle and you have added an extra 6" matting around the frame )
You could also paint an entire section of the wall behind the sofa an accent colour, thus breaking up the length again.
You could use a free - standing bi -fold or tri - fold screen in wicker, wood or fabric, to frame an end table, the end of a sofa or behind a floor plant, against the wall. Again this will visually break up the length into smaller, more proportionate blocks.
I hope some of this will help.

Is the couch centered on the wall? Maybe get some enlargements of photos you like copied at costco or someplace and turn them black and white or sepia. Then frame them and center above sofa. Things look better in groups so three would look nice. if you have more than three, change up the sizes.

Oh, here's a cool place to check out as well.!!!

You can order any size, font, text you want!!! it rubs on and apparently comes right off if you need to remove it before you move. Enjoy!

1] put up a mirror, especially if facing the windows - it will reflect light, making room look bigger
2] put a group of different objects that are related - ship paintings, music CD covers/ticket stubs/drumsticks/guitar picks, skis/lift passes/posters, whatever you are into
3] a family wall - photos, projects by kids
4] shelf with trophies/figures/souveniers
5] buy a window frame, mount on board, and paint an outdoor scene

**Lots of framed photos. Stay away from hard or bright colors so its easier to match them all. Many different sizes and frames. If you cant hide it accentuate it. High and low. From about knee height and staggered. I love that look and see it often in the magazines my wife puts in the bathroom. See, Ive done my research.

My husband and I have a huge wall in our dining room. We went to the local library and found lots of historic pics of our city - back in the late 1800's. We picked out 2. The library put them on CDs. They were in black and white and we changed them to sepia. We're having a local photo shop blow them up to hang on the wall. ☺
