I am trying to potty train my 3 1/2 year old daughter and she is just afraid to even try sitting on the toilet or potty. I have gotten her to start wearing underwear for certain amount of the day but she is just afraid to try sitting on the toilet or potty. She wil just hold in her pee the whole time. It will come and then she will just stop it. She has very good bladder control because she will just stop it again and again. I dont know how healthy it is for her to keep on doing that again and again. I have tried so many different things to get her to sit on the toilet or potty but she will just not even try it. I have tried the toilet seat also. I try asking her if she wants to get a new potty (even though we already have one) any kind that she wants but she just says no to everything. She says no to new underwear also. Just now in the last day or so she has started to come around a little and say she will sit on the toilet or potty but she wont do anything. Any suggestions?

I do have a child sized potty and I am pretty sure that she is not afraid of the flushing sound because sometimes she likes to go into the bathroom and flush the toilet herself. I have tried the doctor threat and telling her that she will get a tummy ache and make herself sick if she holds it in. But nothing seems to be working. I really hate having to hold her down on the toilet though, I only want to do that as an absolutely last resort. Thats why I dont know what to do anymore. I just hope that after a few days of holding it in and seeing how uncomfortable it is she might want to try sitting on the toilet or potty.

Encourage her, use her favorite character (like the Disney princesses) and decorate the bathroom, you can buy party decoration and posters. she can even wear a princess crown when she go potty. Also buy her a potty chart, I always recommend this because it worked great with my son, Not only he can add a sticker to the chart each time he go potty and win a sticker for himself, but each day he completed potty training successfully,he could get a special reward (for him I used the small plastic balls that have and insect, or animal inside, he collect them.) you can offer her a small toy she likes, ice cream or something that she really likes and she don't get so often.
For the underwear problem first buy the one with her favorite character, then trow away all the diapers, even pull-ups and then tell her that they don't have more diapers in the store, If she don't want underwear keep her naked inside the house, when she see you don't change your mind and can't get more diapers will start using the underwear.

My son is 3 and still has a terrible time doing number 2 in either potty but as far as peeing I went to walmart and bought him the "royal flush" potty which was costly for a potty but once he seen that it rewarded him for peeing then he loves it. Its really a good system and helps them past the fear. I had a normal potty and he showed no intrest in it. Its hard but keep trying something has too work!

Try telling her that by not using the potty she can hurt herself. This can damage her bladder in the long run and cause her to have UTI's. There are potty chairs that have a little handle, so it makes the flushing sound so they get used to it. Tell her if she keeps holding in her pee you will have to take her to the doctor.

First of all, if he is nonverbal I would suggest making a chart with a picture of the potty. Everytime you take him to use the potty, have him touch the picture first. This will be his way of communicating to you that he needs to potty (will be useful later too). I would have him touch the picture as soon as you think he needs to go. I agree with previous posters as far as rewarding when he does use the potty. Rewarding does not always have to be a toy or treat... it can be as simple as a big hug from mom, reading a favorite book, etc... Be consistent with whatever you find works.

My son used to sit on the toilet backwards.. (and act like he was driving a car as he waited to go potty)
you may want to ask her if the sound of the flush is her problem.. my daughter hates to flush the toilet cause its loud...

I thought this was gross a bit but it works my Mom used it on me. Keep the bathroom door open and allow her to watch another female use the big potty or if it is possible have another little one who is already potty trained show her how easy it is and how big girls go, and to get her to wash her hands when she flushes the big potty have her wash her hands right after as much as possible to help get into habit!
Good luck!!

well its a proven fact that forcing your child to use the toilet can be very traumatic. have you sat her down and asked her why she doesnt want to try to use the toilet? is it loud? is it scary? is it cold? does she want privacy? does she want you there? if she is now willing to sit on it just give that a try. maybe she is little by little making herself comfortable with it. take it one step at a time. let her sit on it by herself for a few times and once she sees that nothing happens to her, she will feel better about it. once she sits on it and seems to do ok with that, start flushing it with her on there. once she sees that she can sit on it and flush at the same time that will ease her mind. then alll thats left will be her just going while shes sitting on it. a little trick. next time she decides to sit on the toilet, let her and then turn the bathroom water on. running water makes you have to urinate. maybe shell accidentally go and it will speed things up.

well first see if you can get her a toddler training seat if you don't have one kids love all the wierd colors and designs on them. then if that doesn't work ask her why she's affraid of it. if shes scared she's gonna fall through then or that something is gonna get her while she's on it then just get some water in a little spray bottle and tell her its monster be gone spray and that she will be safe once you spary it one the toilet there will never be any monsters in there. just a thought!
