Here is what you should have done: call the police! I am sure that your city/county/township whatever has animal ordinances, especially leash laws. Just call the police and file a report. Next, call Animal Control. They are mostly responsible for handling cases with animals. After that, complain to your town's commission, local humane society, and anyone else that may be able to make a difference. If you livein a neighborhood with a homeowner's association-complain. If you live in an apartment, it is really easy-just tell them you are upset about dogs running around.
i've had the same problem that you are. It seems like very few people actually put their dog on a leash anymore (at least where I live). I have had a couple of dogs charge my dogs, so I know how it feels to be afraid that your dog will be attacked. I often would loudly inform the owners of the animal laws requiring their dog to be on a leash. They would generally apologize profusely.
good luck

First i want to say what a beautiful breed you have. I personally own a Pitbull, which as you probably know is in the same family as your Amstaff. And good for her for scoring so highly on her test.
Secondly, Im sorry for your unfortunate events that have happend in the pas three weeks. I do need to say that these dogs jaws dont "lock". Anyhow on to the question at hand. I would be calling the local dog warden. I personally do use a leash on my pitty, if im walking him, or somewhere where i know someone will be ignorant about his breed. I dont use a leash when he is outside in my yard, or at my fathers where he can run 25+ acres. I do believe it is irresponsible for any owner of anybreed to let thier dog, who apperantly isnt trained well enough to be off a leash, to be running free. Any dog that is loose w/ thier owner should know basic commands such as stay, sit, no, stop. My dog knows "next to mom" and he will even if there are other dogs near him playing/running etc. I dont think these people whom can keep up with thier dogs (apperantly if they could your poor puppy, wouldnt of been attacked, while on a lead.) should leave them run. I dont think that irresponsible owners should leave becuase they dont have any control over them w/out the lead.

Carry a stick or cane and bop the offending animal right on the nose. If you have to repeat it with more force, go for it. In some naturally aggressive dogs this may not work, but should for most breeds. If you or your pet are injured as a result of the animal's tenacity or it's owner's reactions, you will need to get an attorney and stick it to them. You are well within your rights to protect yourself or your staffy from loose animals or people for that matter. Most communities have leash laws but lazy people choose to ignore them. There also is not enough funding for more rigorous animal control enforcement because of shortages of officers, trucks, etc.. If you don't feel comfortable with this method, get some pepper spray and don't be afraid to use it. The reason I would use this as a second option is that you can't always trust the wind and may get some on yourself or your pooch.

OMG Foo its just my oppin but I hope u don’t own a dog u sound as if u would be one of the “irresponsible dog owners” ppl r talking about in here?
U know the kind I mean don’t you foo? The idiots who think that having a (Big Vicious Dog) makes them look hard!!!
They r the kind ov dog owners who SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO OWN A DOG!
And the poor dogs who have no choice in the first place regarding who owns them & who doesn’t no any better than its idiot owner has chose to teach it , is the ones who pay the ultimate penlty
And why??? Because the poor dog got stuck with a dick head for a owner & the poor thing didn’t know anything better, so it was just trying to please its pathetic owner
Put the owner down n give poor dogs a chance maybe! that’s my oppin.

It is against the law in most cities to have a dog off leash, regardless of its temperament.
Keep your cell phone w/ you & have the regular phone number (not 911) for your local police on speed dial or voice activation.
Once you feel your dog is secure, call the police and make a complaint of a dog off leash, regardless of wether the dog has been aggressive or not. Describe the dog & owner, and location. And take a picture if you have a camera phone.
I love dogs...unfortunately if something should happen to a human or another dog, it's the dog that gets punished, not the owner.

Um most places this is illegal -- if it isn't where you live I suggest you get pepper spray &spray on comming dogs & their owners - if pepper spray is illegal-supposidly aerosol hair spray does the same thing - it may get a bit in yourdogs eyes too but it should halt orslow down theon comming dog - its sad we have to walk ourdogs this way - I'd press charges if our dog was hurt or gets attacked again ( easier said than done I know ) but at least tell theowner if it everhappens again he/she will be hearing from yourlawyer ( even if you don't have one) Even if thedog only charges ( a sign of agression ) & you saved yourself & yourdog by holding the vicous animals tongue ( very impressive I may add) My dogs been attacked several times - now I carry a walking metal cane with me in case a irresponsable owner shows up with an offlead out of control dog that could kill or harm mine I just yell so the owner can hear me & give them fairwaring that if their dog goes after mine - it's not, my fault what happens with the cane- isn't the dog's fault but the owners. & I STRONGLY reccomend threatening to get lawyers involved stupid people usually smarten up when loosing money & lawyers is mentoned.
Good luck if yourstill really worriedtry changing where you go forwalksot the time you go ?? Which is only accomidating stupid dog owners needs - I'd call authorities & if he goes tothe park/ walk the same day / time havethem meet him for a chat - butthenagain authorities usually don't care unless childrenare involved but you could mention children were around too ? good luck &I'll have to start using your tongue grabbing trick !!

Most cities have ordinances and you should have called the police and filed a report and or charges.
Call the police/animal control every time you want to take your dog for a walk.
Carry a decent size heavy stick with you for protection. . . this is what alot of people taking walks have to do.
It is NOT right for people to be so irresponsible.
I always use a leash with my animals whether we are getting in the car to go to the vet or for a walk.
I once had a half Chow/half Rotweiller that I even muzzled when I took him to the vet or in places where I though a nip might be possible. . . . I didn't want to take the chance of someone getting hurt because of my animal.

if he can not control his dogs and he can not have his dogs on leashs because there is such thing as a leash law he should not even have his dogs and i hate to say that but i know how it is i own 4 st.bernards and my dogs are very well trained very well behaved dogs and even though they r good dogs i would never let them off a leash unless they were in my fenced yard a guy down the street from me has 2 pits and he has no fence and does not put his dogs on leashs and he would just let them out well 4 times they came on to my property and fought with my dogs 3 of the 4 times i called the police the final time one of my dogs was seriously injured and so was i so i called animal control the guy was fined 5000 for animal irresponsibility his dogs were taken away untill he could prove he had a fence and chain leashs for the dogs on top of that he served 1 week in jail so my advise to you is to contact animal control the humane society or even the polce and they can tell you exactly what needs to be done...hope you get everything taken care of and feel safe to walk on your own street again...good luck

I personally don't think it is fair. One should be able to control their dog all the time.
In another town that I lived in the people who went walking carried golf clubs or other things to be used to defend themselves because many people didn't bother to keep their dog in a yard or chained, etc.
Perhaps you can talk to the police about this problem and see if they might offer any solutions to the problem.

I totally agree. We own a 5 year old border collie and we take her to dog parks. The rule of these parks is that if you can't control your dog or if your dog is aggressive then they are still to be kept on their leads. One day when we were at this park this stupid woman had this dog that was like a hairy horse let her dog off and he just lunged at our dog and bit her on the back near her tail. I was furious and all this stupid woman said was "oh sorry." It's like people who leave dog poo on the pavement aswell, that really annoys me.
I'd never try and walk our dog without her lead on a normal pathway because she gets too excited if she sees other dogs or cats and we can't control her when that happens so we keep her lead on (dog parks excluded of course!)
