Most average price is between $799 to $1500. I have seen them used for much less, and I just bought a new Rock River for $2499.

Used ones can go for any amount but I'd guess anything less than $500.00 isn't worth buying. If you check out the Bushmaster website you'll find them from about $1,000-1,800. Main thing is what you want the rifle for. Long range shooting and plinking at the range you should choose something that has a longer barrel and tighter rifling like a 20" barrel with a 1in9 twist. Self defense I'd still recommend a barrel of at least 15" and I don't mean one with a real long flash supressor that's welded on. For the sake of velocity and accuracy a 15" barrel is minimum. I imagine you can find some older AR-15's with the old 1in12 twist barrel for much less money than a newer model with a tigher rifling and they are good shooters just not "state-of-the-art" compared to the newer models. I'd also stick with the solid conventional stock verses the retractable stock. They are all fun to shoot and the ammo is relatively inexpensive if you buy it online and at least 500 rounds at a time.

I was recently shopping around for .223 rifles at gun shows, gun stores, and even cabela's and most new AR-15s started in the $900+ range, I saw a couple for under 900 but they were pretty basic set-ups with nothing special. Most of the AR type rifles I saw were well over $1200 and some were close to $3000. I saw plenty of used ones too but they were not a whole lot cheaper.

Uncle Sugar pays about $200 a piece for M-16A2's(believe it or not), on mass quantity gov. contract for our Marines and other troops, which is what the "Mattel Toy" is REALLY worth. If you're lookin' to buy one, unless you can pass the BATFE background check and afford the $200 Federal transfer stamp, ON TOP of the $2500-$3500 price tag, IF you can even FIND one, forget about gettin' yourself a full-auto "poodle shooter".
There are several places, most notably Bushmaster or Rock Island, you can get an AR-15 clone w/ all the new fancy bells & whistles for about $1100, if you just have to have a popgun, but why? If you're gonna spend that kind of serious coin, why not get something in a respectable caliber, like 7,62 NATO(.308 Win.) in a H-K91 (G-3) or FN/FAL?

Here in Wyoming I've seen good quality ones starting at $700 and going up to about $1800. A basic AR-15 will be at the lower end. Start adding things like flat top uppers, stainless steel target barrels, upgraded butt stocks and hand guards, the price goes up real fast.

I think it depends on where you live, usually between $800 and $1200 for a new one, depending on which make it is and what options it has. Expect a few bucks less for used.
