I really dont know what could have happened.

But this must be hard for you. Wow, I have always found barn owls to be mesmerizing. I have always wanted to see one in real life.

And you even had a nest. And now they are gone. That has to be hard. I'm sure you wanted to watch the development closely too.

I can only hope the parents survive to breed again!

Have you climbed up and looked in the nest? what if your just missing the parents? and the little one is still in there waiting for them. If so, hopefully they will come back. If not find a wildlife rehabilitator QUICK!!!!

Best wishes!

Only warm blooded animals move their young. . . birds aren't known for moving their young.
A snake,an oppossum,a raccoon etc may have discovered the nest and ate the baby. Upon returning to the nest to feed and finding the baby gone, the mother owl abandoned the nest.

Probably just hiding from you. Barn owls build nests inside old buildings. It is a violation of federal law to do anything that disturbs them. Just in case anybody wanted to know.

Chances are something raided the nest (crows are notorious for this) and took the baby and mom has left. She and her mate may try and establish another nest in a new place since it is still early in bird breeding season and many birds will do two breedings, especially if the first one fails.

Depending on how long they were there, they may have left the nest. A few more details would help.
How long were they there?
Where were they nesting?
What did the babies look like when you last saw them?
Were they covered in fluffy white down or were they feathered?
When was the last time that you saw them?

Perhaps something happened to the baby and the mother left. Or maybe the mother found another nesting site and moved her and the baby. Who knows? You don't give much info.

Chances are they might have flew away, may be because of ther instinct as wild birds. But keep an eye out if they do come back the birds do that all the time in warm places in the year
