I think it is lots of fun to work on a cruise ship. I've been on a cruise once and would love to go on another. The crew seem to have lots of fun and they were very pleasant and made sure the ship's travelers were very well taken care of. They all seem to be very friendly with each other as well. I believe that the ship's captain is going to make all possible means to make sure the journey is a safe one

Safe? Yes. Fun? That completely depends on what you're doing. I doubt the service staff (waiters, cooks, cabin attendants etc) have much fun with their 18 hour 7 day workweeks. They operate under stringent rules, usually with one afternoon off in 7 days. Not allowed to mingle or be in passenger areas.
The entertainment staff has things a little easier. The cruise director staff and the photographers have fairly long hours, but not punishing. The dancers and show people have practice, and at least 2 shows per day. The pay is not so great, though. But the food is good.

Fun.....Yes lots of it!!! As a previous answer said it depends on what depatment you are going in as, but the motto tends to be you work hard you gotta play hard.
You have set hours that you can work and set hours for your off time, this is a set rule as with all major cruise lines. The crew bar is open till 1.30am, and there are always lots of crew parties, theme nights, arranged football with other ships docking at the same time, you get time off in ports to go and explore the islands. The crew office arrange crew tours at a discount of the islands. Bingo for the crew, the list is endless, all this helps!!!!!!
Safe YES...all cre members HAVE TO go through tests etc towards saftey etc etc, and regular drills are held twice a week.
Have a good time
