Go buy a neon stick at your local auto parts store. One with the pulse feature is what you want.
You can hook it up to the remote wire on the amp, this way it'll turn on and off with the amp.
You'll HAVE to use a relay, the remote wire from stereo only puts out about 200ma.
Use this diagram and go from there!

-I actually JUST got done wiring one up for when/if I ever add cooling fans for my amps!
Have Fun!

You can't hook them directly to the amp, but you can purchase a "sound sensor" module that works with the neons and can pulse them in time with the music. Many car neon systems include the sound sensor or have it built in.

in the event that they do no longer seem to be designed as 'sound comfortable' then it won't artwork. there is added circuitry required to make it flicker with the sound. seek for 'sound activated neon subwoofer' there is countless kits on ebay for under $50, and you need to use the universal neons someplace else

What you want is what used to be called a "color organ". While these old relics are slowly making a comeback, they're hard to find.
This is why I've designed one that uses LEDs. If you have a friend that's good with electronics, I'd be happy to send you the schematic.

Yes just depends on how you want it done. Depending on the type of amp you are using, Type of subs, and how many you will be running.
Can you provide me with the equipment you are using and I will tell you exactly how to do it.
