I jog about two miles a day, just trying to lose some vanity pounds and get fit. I usually run the miles at 5.5 mph wearing bulky clothes to help get my heart rate up quicker and sweat more. I used to do 6 or 6.5 mph, but I couldn't run as long. Is it better to jog fast and shorter, or slower and longer?

First Slower, longer would be my choice. You burn the same calories per mile whether you go fast or slow. the fact is that slower the rate the further you can go.

Second of all wearing bulky clothes to sweat off the pounds sounds good in theory. But, (there always is a but) You are really doing yourself more potential harm then good. Sweating is your body way of cooling itself down. By bulking up your clothes the moisture gets trapped and this can raise your body tempurture. When this happens you can potentially have a heat stroke. So don't worry about the water weight.

If you are looking to get fit and loose weight, choose endurance over speed. If you decide to speed things up, you will have a good base to work from.

Higher intensity will help you to lose weight more quickly as long as you go for a long enough period of time.

Be careful with this, though, and increase your speed gradually. Start off building leg strength through hill training and then add in gradual speed work.

I would consider a long, slow run once a week, a couple of tempo runs in the week, and one day for hill and speed work. You'll notice your fitness will improve and then you can gradually speed up your tempo runs and your longer run. I know a lot of runners, both beginners and advanced, who follow this plan. Good luck!

To lose weight it is better to do more at a slower pace, but don't wear the heavy clothes they just make you sweat and you replace that when you drink. It is good for boxing where you make weight and then drink some more, but for permanent weight loss you want the best running you can do--this happens when you are well hydrated.

jog slower for longer. Keep a constant speed and eventually you will be able to jog faster for longer. Dont wear all the big bulky clothes either. that doesnt do anything.

Slower but longer, if you want to lose weights, but nothing to do with sweating, thats just water, you going to drink after and that weight is back!
You have to burn fat ( slow for longer time )!
