Call and ask your dentist.

Metronizadole is an antifungal not an antibiotic. The dentist I work for (I am a hygienist) likes to prescribe Pen VK for infections like an abcess. Amoxicillin is the next choice. (For those not allergic to pen)

Penicillin VK is still the first choice for dental infections, assuming no allergies. Next is clindamycin. I agree, however, that getting rid of the source via root canal or extraction is best.

I'm sure that it varies with each Dentist.
I had Rheumatic Fever when I was young and have to take medication any time I go to have dental work done.

My dentist usually gives me Amoxicillin 500mg capsule. I am not allergic to Penicillin but this is his choice.

Current practice suggests that amoxicillin is the first choice antibiotic for treatment of dentoalveolar infection for those patients who are not allergic to penicillin.

The first line of treatment of dental infection, however, is to remove the source of infection.
