Because one side uses facts and the other side uses a sky fairy. The side with the sky fairy doesn't like losing all the time.

It deals with the big questions in a way that is very practical and palpable to the every day joe. Evolution appears to radically redefine man, the world, and our value system. Likewise, the evolutionists feel that creationism denies science and reason, threatening to take us back to the dark ages. For either side, the way they look at it, the stakes are incredibly high, and the big questions are the most important ones.

Because like gun control or the war in Middle East, it's a "hot" media issue that plays with ideas of personal safety.

You know, I have wondered about that myself.
I mean, nobody ever got this worked up about it, until recently.
Back when I was a kid, evolution was taught in the schools, and nobody got uptight about it...not, anyhow, before we allowed one paranoid lady who was terrified that somehow, her children might be harmed by being exposed to prayer, tell us that we had to kick God out of school.
Since then, things have gotten a bit crazy.
"separation of church and state', a phrase that does not appear in the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence, used to mean that the state was to keep it's nose out of church business. It never meant that God was not welcome in state-funded places, nor should it be twisted to mean any such nonsense.
Anybody with eyes can see that kicking God out has not resulted in anything but letting chaos in.

The defense of the literal reading of the Bible fails if page 1 becomes allegory. In order to defend a meaningless doctrine, a vocal minority wants to undercut science education in the United States.

Creation is emotional for the people who believe that we were created by god. It's emotional because people who oppose that belief, i.e. people who believe in evolution, are basically telling them that we were NOT created by god, basically telling them that their entire religious structure is a load of garbage and they are stupid for believing in god and not in evolution. And since god is generally a big part of a religious person's life, it would probably be pretty insulting to be told that their main figure-head does not exist.

Because a huge number of people have been brainwashed by the bible believers. They are afraid to doubt what their handlers tell them. They have been told they will be punished beyond belief if they ever question their book.

The question is not really about creation. It's about authority. Is the Bible accurate in all areas or is it not? The atheist knows this is foundational, and attack with all their might.

What aggravates people like me is to hear believers in evolution call their belief "science". It is not science, it is a religious belief. They have a dogmatic obsession with it.
