If it's my soul that has freewill, isn't my body just a receptacle for the soul which is what makes the sinful choices (from a Christian point of view). How is my flesh at war with God?

Well, our physical body holds our heart, mind and soul. We are commanded to use our physical body as the house and temple of God. By desecrating the flesh, we damage the temple. 1 Corinthians 6:19, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."

We are created in the image of God above the animals. Man is both body and spirit and two are a living soul. This is the image of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When an animal dies he perishes with his flesh but God made man in his image with an eternal spirit. When Satan tempts man it is in his flesh it is the flesh which is not in agreement with God and it is the flesh which by sin is cursed. When god made man he knew man had a sin nature and he had a plan to bring man to his righteousness this plan was to come to the world as a man and overcome temptation as a man and to remain perfect and to pay the penalty of sin which is death for man with his flesh. The Bible teaches that man was created from the dust and then God breathed in a spirit and the first should serve the last. there are many examples of the two throughout God's word. We were given the law as a physical example of God's righteousness and man could not live up to it it is the reason God provided the atonement because of our sin Those who accept the atonement are by faith new creature no longer under law but made new in agreement with God's righteousness

Whoever told you that was grossly mistaken. Your body isn't just a receptacle for the soul, it IS the soul in flesh. The flesh is NOT the opposite of spirit, and it is not at war with anything.

Your soul has freewill... and yes your soul is what, therefore, makes the sinful choices. On the one hand, God entices you to be spiritual, loving, tuned-in / inspired, self-controlled, rational, etc. On the other hand, your natural (ie physical) instincts entice you towards no self-control... just animal instincts. So, in a sense, God and "flesh" are in a war to win your soul. Free choice determines which one will win.

if you are not christian. then you do what you want to do. obeying your sense of what is right and wrong. your body follows after what choices you make. and sometimes your body persuades you, your soul, to do things. that's your freewill in operation.

your flesh would only be at war with God if you sought to do what pleases God.

There's man's will which is sinful by nature, in that we are flesh and bones, and prone to make mistakes and all have faults, and then there's God's Will, which is Righteous and Perfect-without any faults, Spiritually-minded. There is man's way and then there is God's Way, They oppose one another.

When a person hasn't submittied his/her life and heart over to God, because the flesh (sin-nature) want's to do it's own thing, his/her own way apart from God, then that's what is meant by a person's flesh is at 'war with God'- it's struggling and fighting to do things "our" way, when we want it and how we want to live- all these things and feelings are in the flesh and argue against God and His urging you in your spirit to turn from it and turn to Him, toward righteousness. It's the opposite of having "Peace with God"

Your flesh represents carnal knowledge and all that accompanies it. It's the carnal man (flesh) that is at war with the spirit man, not necessarily God. Read Ephesians 6:12.

Let the man who told that to you be able to find his mouth in his face and not in his foot.
