To prevent, put the weed retardant paper (that black paper you can get from any gardening section at major hardware chains), and mulch on top.
To get rid of them - you can either use the spray ones (ortho that's good for a year seems to work fine, can't say for myself as i have time to weed), or manually remove them as often as possible.

sometimes the best way is not aleways the easiest
but it will be theraputic .
pull out the weeds by the roots before they produce seeds and leave them where they fall,
this will be easy after a rain or when the weeds are not yet fully grown.
to prevent weeds from coming all you have to do it turn out the lights, you can even use cardboard or black plastic(this is good for strawberries because they will rot if they touch humid ground, and the bugs can get to them).
MULCH
what you do is to cover the ground with mulch which is the same principal as compost but it includes the whole garden surface
the top part of the soil where the topsoil is being produced houses a world or microbiotic life.
Mulch is organic material green or dry that covers the ground, the thicker the better the composting process will turn it in to black topsoil
the humidity is preserved underneath and promotes the devellopment of worms(their exists no better compost than their excrements)and a variety of micro biotic life which together with the mulch produce more topsoil.
the mulch also keeps the ground temperature even and guards against the impact of the rain ,which would other wise brings salt to the surfave if on unprotected land
Mulch also prevents the soil from drying out because of the sun and, lay it open to wind erosian.
PLEASE
do not use chemicals because the water will wash them into the ground and if enough people did that, you would be guilty of helping to contaminate subteranean water suplies that other people could be pumping up to drink

I take a large screw driver and put it beside the weed, this helps to push the weed out with the roots. I have also put weed mat in my flower beds with some bark over the top. The weed mat prevents weeds from growing and keeps the moisture in the soil as long as two weeks in the summer. If I want to plant something I just cut a hole in the weed mat, place the plant and replace as much of the weed mat as I can. Go green!!

If you're going for an organic gardening experience, it's best to pull each one of the little buggers by hand.
Here's a great trick I use often: When the weeds show up as little sprouts I use a hoe to pull them out - just run the hoe thru the dirt to lightly pull them out. Once you remove the weed from the dirt it will stop growing and turns into compost.
To avoid weeds in the future, use weedcloth or ground covers when planting.
I got my gardener to quit using chemicals in my garden all together about 6 years ago. The weeds only come up when I neglect an area and forget to put down weedcloth or newspapers.
Lastly, some "weeds" are quite nice as long as they don't go to seed. Just be sure to deadhead before they seed to stop them from spreading. One weed I've got growing everywhere actually has edible flowers that are quite nice in salads.

The best way is to pull them out by the roots. If you use a herbacide you are introducing a poison to your yard and if you have pets or small children you may accidentally poison them! If you burn them, you have to wait until they are dead anyway because green material doesnt burn as well so you may not get the entire weed and they may come back, (you also may accidentally burn too much and burn down your house or garage, someone may get hurt and you have to get a burning permit.
The bonus to pulling weeds by hand is that you are getting as much excercise and burning as many calories as the same amount of jogging! And its emotionally satisfying to physically get out there and yank something when you are ticked off.

I don't care what the "books" say, get down on your hands and knees and start pulling them. Its good exercise and helps the environment by NOT using chemicals.
If you have a large area, get a tool called: Grandpa's Weeder. I have one and it makes getting the weeds out easy work. It is the original effortless weed remover since 1913. No bending, pulling or kneeling. As easy as 1, 2, 3! For almost a hundred years gardeners young and old have used Grandpa’s Weeders.

weeds in your lawn or weeds in your garden? If in your lawn, well you need to buy a grass that is made for the environment you are in, that usually crowds out the weeds. If in your garden, many people put down old newspapers or stuff between the rows, with some dirt on them, that will stop most of the weed problem.

I asked this question a little while ago, and everyone told me that the most environmentally safe way, is to just hunker down and pick them yourself...root and all.
Someone mentioned vinegar, but I didn't try that. I'm just slowly getting rid of my dandilion garden one at a time. I did find this nifty tool at home depot that is called a weed puller...(mostly for dandys) and you insert it into the ground...pull a lever and it pops the dandilion out root and all...I wanted to buy one but it was 20 bucks. So I"ll get one this weekend and demonstrate it. :)

bleach is the only thing that I've ever known to actually kill them for an entire season.
just grab a bottle and pour--DO NOT do it though if you have young children or pets that play in or near where you want to get rid of the weeds.
