It depends. Traditionally, the bridesmaids' dresses were paid for by the bride's parents (or whoever was paying for the wedding). In this day and age, most bridesmaids are required to buy their own dresses. I think that the bride should mention this up front and that she should also try to keep the cost of the dress at a reasonable level.

Yes, I did buy it when I was a bride's maid and now that I am getting married my friend's are buying theirs.
I remember when I was a bride's maid the bride made me buy a very expensive dress, so for my wedding I choose something "last year collection" but very pretty. This way my bride's maid are saving a lot

According to tradition, the bride/bride's parents pay for any costs incurred by the bridesmaids: travel, hotel, dresses, shoes, hair, and makeup. It is supposed to be figured into the budget for the wedding. Standing up for someone in their wedding was considered a position of honor and not something that the bridesmaid was expected to pay for. However, as people are waiting later to get married and weddings become more extravagant, brides often now expect the bridesmaids to pay for everything. Because of this, brides should keep in mind the cost of the dresses and shoes as well travel costs, etc., being incurred so that being in the wedding does not become a burden to the bridesmaid. Check with Miss Manners.

Most of they do. This isn't written in stone. If the bride or the bride's family has a lot of money to spend on the wedding and offers to do it that is great. If it is not offered, the bridesmaid pays for it herself. Most brides try to be considerate and keep the cost down of the bridesmaid dresses they choose.

This depends - often alot of brides choose to buy the bridesmaids dresses but you should speak to the bridesmaids and see how they feel about buying their own dresses. However, if you are going to ask the bridesmaids to buy their own gowns then it is important to remember that the decision over the style of dress should be left up to them.

It depends. Some people can afford to buy or rent their bride's maid dresses and others have their girls buy them themselves. You shouldn't be uncomfortable asking either, as long as the dresses are totally expensive that it. My girls bought their own dresses.

I actually paid for my girl's dresses but their situations were unique. My maid of honor has a little girl that is my flower girl so I agreed to pay for her dress while she paid for her daughter's. Then my other bridesmaid recently got into an accident and could not pay for her dress so I paid for hers (and shoes) as well.
It is more common than not that the bridesmaids pay for their own dress. But if you are comfortable with paying for it or want to help with the cost, there's nothing that says that you can't do that either.

Nowadays, mostly bridesmaids buy their own dresses. The exception to this is if the marrying couple have huge or unlimited access to money and sometimes they'll buy the dresses, but count on the bridesmaids to buy their own.
