They are glands located just inside of the dogs rectum. The purpose of these glands was to sent their stools to mark their territory when they defecate. They also will defecate over another males or females stool to reclaim territory and then the other trespasser will know their on someone else turf.

These glands are no longer used for this, since the dog is now domesticated. This is why they should be expressed every so often.

Anal glands are two small sack like glands that sit just inside the rectum. They contain scent (this is why your dog sniff's other dog's butts, and other dog's feces). In a normal dog, the anal glands are expressed onto normal formed stool whenever they deficate. In dogs with diarrhea, the anal glands can become overly full, which may cause the dog to "scoot" across the carpet, or lick at it's rectum. Some (generally smaller) dogs may have frequent trouble expressing their anal glands. In these cases, they need to be taken to someone that can express them for the animal. If this isn't done, the anal glands can become overly full and rupture!

The scent that the anal glands carry contains information about the dog itself (Male/female; breeding age; in heat, etc.)

They are two small sacs around the dogs anus. They contain extremely smelly juices (smells like dead fish if not worse) and they use these to help poop- but only small portions, it helps it go through easier (ewww i know). Dogs will also "express" their anal glands if they are frightend- my little dog did that when my great dane jumped on her. They need to be emptied every so often (maybe once every 2-3 months) so they don't get impacted- and painful. If your dogs anal sacs are packed they usually drag their butts around, smell weird around the butt area and lick at them alot . Vets will do it for around $20 I believe. Groomers usually also do it with the groom. Only thing is, there is two ways to express them, internally (they actually squeeze them from inside the anus) and externally (the way groomers do it) and they basically push the sacs up from under the anus and out pops the juices and yes it's sick. I wouldn't allow your groomer to do it as they may do it incorrect and cause more problems then before. Good Luck!

Anal glands are how a dog scent marks their territory. They're located either 3 and 9 o'clock or 4 and 8 o'clock (can't remember which) from the dog's rectum.

They are glands under the tail just inside the anus. They fill with fluid and need to be drained about once a month. And its very easy. Just take a tissue and squeeze on the sides.

they release them in times of great fear... if a dog is fed a proper nutritious diet of dry dog kibble , the glands usually take care of themselves,, feeding table scraps, crappy food and they sometimes become impacted.. other than that,,, look it up on the internet
