He's an impressionist

Both he kicked started the expressionist era but he was more of a post impressionist or at least that is what he is known for. Unfortunately he was in a lag period in between to very popular styles and that is what confuses most people.

Although he met many of the Impressionist painters and was influenced by their style, Van Gogh is not considered a member of that school. The easiest way to tell is that the Impressionist period refers mostly to works painted between 1867 and 1886, while most of Van Gogh's best known works were done from 1888 on.
