A Papal Conclave works like this:

+ A pope dies and is buried

+ The cardinals come to Rome for the conclave that will elect the new pope. The word conclave (Latin, *** + clavis, literally, "locked with the key") designates:
. • The place in a locked section of the Vatican where the cardinals elect a new pope.
. • The actual gathering of the cardinals.

+ The conclave begins 15 to 20 days after the pope's death.

+ The cardinals pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during a Mass

+ The cardinals, sealed in the Sistine Chapel, vote every morning and afternoon.

+ A two-thirds majority plus one is required for election for the first 30 ballots. After that, a simple majority is required.

+ After each vote, they burn the ballots and add special chemicals to make the smoke white or black.
. • Black smoke means no new pope yet.
. • White smoke announces the election of a new pope.

+ The cardinals may elect any baptized male they wish. There have been occasions in the past where they have elected a layman. After their election, the layman has to be ordained priest and bishop.

+ They ask the one elected if he accepts. The moment he accepts, he is pope.

+ The pope chooses his “Papal” name.

+ Then the new pope is announced to the world.

With love in Christ.

You have to become a cardinal first, the after the reigning pope dies or resigns, the cardinals gather in a concave in the Sistine Chapel to select a new pope. Theoretically, any male Roman Catholic can be chosen. In practice, one of the cardinals is picked.

Well, you'd have to be a priest for starters. Then work your way up to Cardinal. Getting to the level of Cardinal takes time, there is a lot to learn and do.

The Cardinal's elect the new Pope from among their ranks.

Well, I thing being Catholic helps =). And then you need to rise through the ranks of the catholic faith to Cardinal. And then it is my understanding that when a Pope dies that the cardinals of the world meet and vote on who among them should be the next Pope.

Papal conclave... all the Church's cardinals under the age of 80 gather in private and cast votes.

Edit- You do not need to be a cardinal to be elected pope. Past practice has usually limited it to cardinals, but it could be any male catholic.

You should ask Imacatholic2. Becoming the Pope takes the heck of a lot of intense work, and sacrifice and prayer, and acceptance of Jesus Christ, a whole bunch of stuff.....

You would begin with seminary in the Catholic Church, then work your way up. Think of the pope as a CEO of a major corporation called: Organized Religion, Inc.

First, you need to lead a congregation as a priest that brings in a lot of money to the church.
Then you need to lead a number of priests as a Bishop, that bring in a lot of money to the church.
then you get appointed Cardinal, and are the go-to guy for complaints and reports about sexual abuse by priests of young boys. So- you hide the information to protect your organization.

then, your fellow Cardinals see that you have been a good soldier in protecting the organization, so they elect you pope.

oh- perhaps god has something to do with it as well.
