Yeah, near as I can gather this is quite simple in that
1. Jesus is the 'true light'
2. Which sheds his light upon "every man that cometh into the world." This means "every man" whether they are inclined toward Jesus or inclined toward evil, but all with darkness (For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God according to Romans 3:23)
3. His light will reveal the darkness in our lives and with that, some will be humbled and choose salvation and others will love their darkness and hate the light, which we have already established is Jesus.

John is the only official gospel written by an Apostle.
He was also the last Apostle to die (in Greece) sometime around 100 CE.
John, like Jesus was a devoted gnostic and member of the Nazarene faith of Jesus. He was also a realist, having seen what Paul of Tarsus had done to James, the Blood brother of Jesus, what the other christian fanatics had done to twist and contort the true message of Jesus.

So John accepted a compromise. He wrote his gospel according to the fairy story created by Paul of Tarsus to hide the true agenda and message of Jesus- but in doing so, he brilliantly implanted his gnostic beliefs in various passages.
You have just quoted one of them.
So unless you are prepared to see Jesus, his message for its truth, you will never be enlightened and you will never find a correct answer to your question.
However, if you seek the truth of this quote from John, then read the Supreme Bible of God and see the real message that Jesus always intended be revealed.

Could be by supernatural preaching because Jesus was the Word in the flesh. The term Light is used to show that in Jesus there is no darkness, only truth. The truth is given to all men coming into the world. God's word is a lamp unto our feet.
No one will be without excuse.

It appears that following your logic and editing style, unto John 1:12 it is stated "But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the Sons of God."
It appears you have stepped on the toe of polytheism.
If you don't want to hear the Truth or another and outside representation, don't ask a question on an open forum.
BTW, why did you misquote John 1:9 by adding the name of Jesus? Isn't there something on the last page of Revelation about doing that kind of editing?

1- Everyone is NOT illuminated unless they accept Jesus..This verse means that God's revelation is universally available, It does not signify universal salvation. The cross reference, Isaiah 49:6 And he said, It is a light things that shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give the for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Jesus was commissioned to be the light to the Gentiles, it was already common knowledge he was to the Jewish people. When Jesus said on the cross "it is finished" the veil in the temple was rent from bottom to top giving ALL FREE access to the mercy seat of Christ, not just to certain people who belong to certain churches or hold certain beliefs. Everyone will not be saved..some will not go to heaven...but everyone has the choice to. God Bless You And Keep You BTW A personal relationship with Christ is just that, no one can make that choice for you...if you dont accept him while lliving, no one can for you once your dead. that was a Montanist practice in ancient Biblical times that has bled over to modern day churches. If one could be saved after going to hell, why did the rich man ask God to go and tell his brothers where he was and how horrible it was...why didnt he get saved then, simple he already made his choice..thnx

I would tie this in with the verse which reads, "He came unto His own, and His own received Him not." John 1:11?
and with Romans 1 For that which may be known of God has been revealed to them.

I was recently told the story of an elderly man in rural China, when told of Jesus, he exclaimed,"I KNEW there was a god!"
I subscribe to that theory that we each know, innately, Our Creator. Through pride, we reject Him.

Sufficient grace is provided by God to all, by whatever means he chooses, but primarily through the only Church Jesus ever founded, authorized, empowered, and guaranteed ... for the purpose of our salvation ... the Catholic Church.

It is called curiosity and desire to know the truth about God and to experience unconditional love. Most people resist it.

Christ illuminates everyone, whether in this world or in the spirit sphere, where vicarious Temple work for the dead is performed by His faithful on earth, so that everyone can hear about Jesus.
Haven't you ever heard of baptisms or endowments for the dead?
