An Evangelist is someone who preaches the Gospel. They are missionaries and also the authors of the four new testament gospel books..Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are considered Evangelists.
Or a Protestant minister or layperson who serves as an itinerant or special preacher, esp. a revivalist.
I have no problem with evangelists, they are sharing what they consider the truth with others and when they go on missions they do good for those who are in need.
As for Televangelists they seem to have a pretty bad rap, but no one is perfect.

Unfortunately evangelists, (especially tele-evangelists) have a terrible reputation. I do, however know some honest and upstanding evangelists with wonderful ministries.
One of the reasons that I believe evangelists get bad reps is that they are not planted in one place. Their mobility usually hinders relationships with those they intend to minister to.
On the other hand, some of them are just crazy. I mean.. literally crazy. But I'm sure that doesn't even need to be said in our society.. just turn on the television. It doesn't take long to find someone who apparently is completely off their rocker. Some of them might even have started their ministry with good intentions, but somewhere along the way... *SPLASH* ... off the deep end.

I have studied religion for several years, and have even spent a year studying at a seminary in Pittsburgh. Though I am an advocate for freedom of religion, I also think it is important to discuss the effects of religion on society. I am often terrified of the implications that stem from evangelical theology and philosophy. The fundamentalist approach to the Bible is highly irresponsible, and ignores many important scholastic and historical findings that should serve to inform the faith. Any system of thought that encourages people to abandon their reason and follow blindly, is dangerous and suspect. Jesus himself was a student of the ancient writings, as well as a teacher of knowledge and thought. Issues of religion can have a great impact on individuals, and as such, people should be encouraged to seek greater knowledge and insight into their beliefs and faith, and not simple be told exactly what it is they should believe. I think evangelists are driven by a deep desire to serve God, which is a noble goal. However, I fear that their work often leads people further from the love and knowledge of God than it does to exalt him.

If you're speaking of Televangelists, I think by and large that they're frauds and scam artists. They're in it to make a profit, plain and simple.
If you're referring to every day church-going Evangelists, I don't have a problem with them as people, since I know a few of them to be very friendly, well-intentioned people. I don't agree with their beliefs, but that doesn't make them bad people. When someone of the faith starts preaching to me, I listen to what they have to say and respond appropriately. If they try to convert me, I respectfully tell them that I'm not interested in converting, but I appreciate their concern. Hopefully they're adult enough to leave it alone from there, but if not, and if they're interested in engaging in a debate, I happily oblige, but only if they can keep it civil.

Well...all an "evangelist" is, is somebody who is telling the truth as they perceive it. To some extent, you could call people like Carl Sagan or Penn & Teller "evangelical".
If you're talking about Christian Evangelists with their own shows and other events, I don't interract with them. I just let them entertain their peanut galleries and move on.

Let me "summerize." Hot sun, longer days, kids out of school.
Now, to summarize: I think a great many evangelists are sincere in their beliefs and are actually attempting to do what they believe to be a good thing.
I think some are merely manipulative money-grubbing frauds.
I think both types are misguided.

Evangelist means preacher. We are all preachers of one thing or another. Even if it is just our bad taste.
The more pompous ones in the words of the movie OH! GOD! "Tell him he should just go sell earth shoes." They get their reward in full now, raking in money. The Bible does not have nice words for them. Personally, I hate theives and they are theives of faith and people's money.

I don't respond to them, I don't interact with them.
I let them go sell crazy somewhere else. I'm stocked here.

They're inconsistent and irrational. If their standards were internally consistent, then it wouldn't bother me. They are, however, always contradicting themselves and try to set up their own standards whereby to condemn anyone else. I have no problem when I'm criticized rationally, but Evangelical standards are simply not rational.
