Has anyone built or used any Intranet software before? I've looked at some open source packages that seem okay, I've tried Microsoft Sharepoint, they all seem okay but I'm worried about compatibility and upgrading in the future of this Sign Manufacturing company. Anyone with experience in Intranet development, please shed some wisdom on your process.

I'm not sure why you'd answer if you're not sure what the question is, other than to gain points, however, an Intranet is basically a companies internal website with restricted access to company documents and programs.

I set up freebsd as a server and linux as clients. Made two of the five linux boxes as samba share boxes.
This is extra secure.

If you want more security, install OpenBSD as the server, use samba to share files, and limit permissions.

You can use Xen with linux or netbsd to set up virtual boxes on a single computer and network within that environment.
