For my rarely used ones, I usually do a quick cleaning before shooting including running a patch down the bore to catch any oil that may be in there.
After shooting do a thorough cleaning and oil it well. I run a lot of oil down the bore to keep it from any corrosion (hence the advise above).
Check on it every three to six months, depending. In a high humidity area, take extra precautions like silica gel packs and a zip lock bag. If you don't use it and lubricated it well, it should not require more cleaning.
Never use WD40 to store your metals. It evaporates after a while. I like Breakfree CLP.

After you shoot it give it a thorough cleaning, and just leave a very light coat of oil and the metal, too much oil will collect the dust in the air and gum it up. Check it every 4-5 months, and see if it needs a quick cleaning. I also recommend CLP. I shoot every couple of weeks and have never had a problem with my guns jamming due to poor maintenance.

Clean after every shooting session. Or at least once a year (if stored unshot).

to prevent corrosion, and gumming I recommed cleaning at least once a month with a light lube after. Thats what we use for our issued weapons.

after you shoot, clean it, oil with a medium to light oil, like engine oil for example, wipe it down, DON't oil your ammos, then keep for the next year's firing session.

With todays Powder you would not have to do it very often.. Possibly after you have fired 2500 rounds of ammo..
