not within a few miles of the beach, but right on the beach.
and not an RV park, we need to be able to pitch a tent.
if you have the specific names of the camping parks or even a website, that would be very helpful
southern california meaning between LA and San Diego, on the coast.
thanks

There are several campgrounds on the beach which accept tent camping. San Elijo & South Carlsbad state beaches in San Diego County for starters, plus there are others in Orange County, Malibu, Ventura County and Santa Barbara County. The big problem is that California state beaches take reservations 7 months in advance. There can be literally NO...as in ZERO...open campsites all throughout the summer months because of this fact. Would-be campers are welcome to show up at the parks to see if there are any cancellations, but the cancellation rate is very low. If you hurry, you'll still find some spots for May; I was just on the Refugio State Beach website yesterday (that campground is in Santa Barbara Co) and they had a number of dates available in May...mostly during the middle of the week. There were even isolated campsites open on random days in June...though not many. During July and August, there were simply NO available campsites for ANY day. If you would be willing to wait until September to make a camping trip, then you would be able to have a wide choice of campsites.
Or another thing you could try would be to move your trip further up the coast. There are some National Forest campgrounds on the way to Big Sur...and national forests use a first-come, first-serve system.
At any rate, all I know about California beach camping, I put onto my website, along with the photos I took. You can look at the camping section, which is at the following URL: http://www.family-vacation-getaways-at-los-angeles-theme-parks.com/Southern-California-Camping.html
I don't sell anything. It's simply an informational site.

Well, you certainly narrowed it down. There is only one campground that is "right on the beach", not an RV park. That's Doheney State Beach. All the others- San Clemente, San Onofre, San Elijo, or South Carlsbad- are either on the bluffs above the beach or a short hike from the beach.
You can reserve sites up to six months in advance at www.reserveamerica.com. If you are lucky, there might be some spots available for Thanksgiving weekend still available, but probably not. Want Memorial Day weekend? Sure, just call or click on November 1, and you can get a site.
Good luck!

Doheny State Beach and San Onofre. Both are located south of Los Angeles, and north of San Diego. Good luck. RV's and tents are OK

Well, it is not really L.A. county..yet,there is a place on the side of the 101 highway just before Carpinteria where you can park your car, r.v. whetever, and pitch a tent right on the beach. The exit is one mile above the 33 ojai highway , if you are heading north from L.A. Forgive me for not knowing the exact exit.
