(Please dont be insulted) A athiest dies so why have a funeral. why buy a siut, why buy a coffin if there is no place to go. let them rot in the ground, no coffin if there is no were to go to why dress nice. No halo or harp or devil horn they lay there forever so why should we dress them up. That was a peom my friend wrote i think its not that bad but what do you think.

just to prove to you i did not write this my friend timmy wrote this for english class hes a protestant christian he has blond hair blue eyes he is quite short my english teacher is called mrs fisher and he goes to argeod high school and lives in wales there now do you believe me so stop with the insults i have a very poor selfestem rigth now

Well, I don't want a funeral, a coffin, a pretty dress, etc. I've already expressed to my husband and kids what I want. Just need to get it into writing :) And it is this:
One thing I know for certain is I do not want to take up space on this earth when I am gone. Therefore, I want to be cremated. I want my ashes returned to the earth, and have a tree planted there. I don't want a funeral, but a party. I would love if people could come together and share some laughs and just have a good time sharing their memories of me.
We were laughing about this the other day actually ... my "funeral" should be held at an amusement park, and I want to be taken on a roller coaster ride lol.

Actually I don't particularly see much in that except taking a mickey at non-belief.
I find it funny that people either just don't get it or refuse to see it.. in the modern age, a funeral is to comfort the ~living~ not the send off the dead. It is a part of the grieving cycle which everyone goes through no matter their belief system. It is also a matter of choice, I will be cremated and have no funeral as I will have no children left behind. However, I would never insult another by saying just because they don't think they are 'going' anywhere after death that they are wasting their time with a funeral.

I'm not insulted I agree with you or better yet get creamated and throw one of those old fashioon wakes... a big party for people to celebrate your life.... the question is to the christians.... why do you go through such thing as a funeral when you end up rotting in the ground like the rest of us? Just because the devil tells you you're gonna reap a reward after you are dead so you will sell your souls while you are living don't mean he can get it done.... you see where he has the advantage is that no one can come back and complain or warn you what really happens after you are dead... get it?(Please dont be insulted)

Funerals are for the LIVING to mourn and pay respect to the dead.
Do you think atheists are animals without basic human emotions of love compassion and empathy?
The only difference between an atheist funeral and a theist funeral is one or more people mentioning god, that's it.
Would you like to disrespectfully throw your loved ones into the ground naked? Then just shovel dirt on their corpse and walk away?
No, so why the hell would you think an atheist would want to do that?

Sometimes atheists choose eco-burial, which is what you're getting at.
Funerals are for the living. While we're alive we are capable of missing loved ones who've died and funerals/wakes are places where those people can meet and celebrate the life of that person together.
I'd have thought that was obvious to an educationally challenged mole, but obviously there is a class of person less intelligent and more blind. Hope this helps.

A very interesting concept. I guess if an atheist is going to have a funeral, the pastor, hymns, and the religous part of the ceremony is rather meaningless. I suppose that atheist funerals are just for family and friends to mourn.

Even atheists form emotional attachments to people that aren't always logical. Not to mention, the family of the atheist may include believers that prefer a funeral. I personally think burial is a waste of land, and would prefer to be creamated.

a funeral is for the living to remember the person they've lost.
personally, I'd RATHER rot in the ground, and become part of everything again, than be pumped full of chemicals and sealed up in a box.

Your "friend" should learn when to use the article "an" instead of "a". For that matter you should both learn how to spell "poem" and "atheist" before you write about either one.
