Unfortunately, both breeds are genetically aggressive. Proper training and socialization and at the right age can help, a lot, but some dogs and certain breeds will always have some type of aggression, no matter the training. Not all chows are vicious, not all sharpeis are vicious but in my experience in working with animals for the last 3 1/2 years, most of them are very aggressive.

You will find good and bad in Shar Peis, Chows and every breed but the key is to understand the breed. Chows are "one person" (this can be a family or just certain members of a family) dogs. They are very stubborn and Chows that are true to their breed will leave a room when an "outsider" comes. This "outsider" may consider this an act of unsocial behavior. When chased or cornered, they may bite. (If I wanted to be left alone and you kept touching me, I might bite you too!) They are very protective of their "family". They need socializing starting at a young age so they don't see everyone as "outsiders" however I do not think they are a "bad" breed. I have owned 11 Chows so far and been part of a Chow family for over 20 years and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Well, I'd say the sweetie would be the exception, as the vast majority of chows and shar peis I've met have not been pleasant. A couple have been downright dangerous.
HOWEVER I would say this is down to the owner's lack of ability to cope with their dog's natural temperament. Shar peis always seem lovely as puppies and then something seems to go wrong along the line. Of course there are nice shows and shar peis- they're the ones whose owners know how to handle them.

We had a Chow for a total of ten years when he died of natural causes . He was absolutely sweet, undemanding and very clean . I do have to admit that I watched him closely when we took him out for his walks and people would come up and wanted to pet him . Never once did he make a move to anything . He was a one -man-dog and even though he tolerated me well enough he ADORED my husband . To this day we pine for him and hope he is in doggie heaven to greet us there some day .
I think you have to respect a breed like that and just be alert when they are little . We never played rough with him and teased him to bring out bad traits . I would have long bought another one but are too old now and he would be left behind .
