If God could create the Heavens and the Earth, creating a little bit of light to hang around until he made a permanent source really wouldn't be a problem.

Because the bible doesn't make any sense. How can there be a day in the universe. Days are measured on each planet differently depending on their rotation cycle....so how come god (which we are told is timeless) did his tasks over days and how come it needed a rest, if it's so powerful? anyone with a tiny little bit of brain can see the whole thing is as believable as Buffy the vampire slayer!

Actually, in the story the sun and moon were created on the fourth day, not the sixth - the sixth was animals and humans.
But to answer the question, it's an allegory. It was never intended to be how it 'actually' happened. It's only in recent years with the rise of fundamentalism and creationism that a small minority of people have decided to take it literally. The vast majority of Christians and Jews never have.

You can interpret the making of light as the big bang - which created the universe, it was much much later that the stars and Earth came into being. "Day" would be a God-day, which, as Gods are (usually) immortal, would last billions of our years.

Another error in Bible creation fiction. Enjoy watching the Creationists explain it away.
