Since you have out of towners, it might be a good idea for you to send out save the date cards(these go out 6 months in advance) and include some hotel information for the area, that way people can make their travel and accomodation arrangements well in advance. If you dont do this, then you want to send them at least 8 weeks in advance, if you do send the STD, then the normal 6 weeks is fine.
Best of luck!

A lot of guides suggest 6 to 8 weeks, but I think some people may need more time than that to make travel arrangements/book time off work etc, especially if they're coming from a long distance. We are sending out our invitations about 3 months before. I've also known someone who sent out her invitations almost 4 months in advance. I thought it was kinda odd at first, but since I started planning my own wedding i understand why she did and I don't think it was such a bad idea.

Invitations are sent between 6-10 weeks before the wedding.
You can send Save-the-Dates to the out of towners before then, if you want. (But if you send someone a save-the-date, you MUST also send them an invitation-- removing them from the invitee list after that save the date is sent is NOT allowed!) If you can, try to include hotel deals and travel info with the invitations and/or save-the-dates.
BTW: It's important to remember that you, as the man, are the fiance. She, the woman, is the fiancee.

I would suggest sending out save the date cards or letting all of your out of town guests when your wedding is. We have people coming from all over the US as well as Overseas (Ireland and Japan) so we are sending out our save the date magnets this Summer (our wedding is June '08) and then we will send our formal invitations approx. 3 months prior to the wedding. This way everyone will know to start looking for flights, you never know when a good deal will come up.
Keep in mind though that airlines only book 331 days in advance, so that means for our wedding in June '08, the airlines will start booking at the end of July this year. You don't want to send your save the dates before people are able to book thier flights.
Congrats!

2 options
you can 1st send out save the date cards (which are less fancy then invitations) that let them know when the wedding is and such.
an dthats about like 3 to 5 months before.
then like 2, 2.5, 3 you send out invitations where you get responses and rsvps for your need.
but if just invitations 3 to 4 months before

You should send them out at least 4 weeks prior to the wedding so they have time to make reservations for hotels. An idea: You can call a nice hotel and ask if you can get a special rate for rooms for guests to your wedding and if so let your out of town guests know to mention your last name or grooms last name when booking. Congrats.

Six to eight weeks. You need to find out the final date the caterer needs the guest number, then add several days to that so you have time to phone people who don't rsvp.

if flights are involved, give them a sporting chance to get good deals. i'd say two months for those living farthest away, one for less/everyone else.
