The ultimate goal is to have a democratic presence in the region, besides the Israelis. It is akin to herding cats, and at the moment, Iraq is a drawing point for the terrorists. We would rather fight them there than in the US. My theater is Afghanistan, and there also many of the insane Islamics are getting dealt with.

They won't make up, one group will take power and suppress the other one (like Saddam did) and the area has great potential to become a hotbed for terrorist activity. Think about our oil addiction, and realize the danger of an entity that opposes the US controlling that oil and what they could do with the revenue against us. In that scenario, leaving is like committing suicide... since we'd be funding our own demise, living in an ignorantly blissful "peaceful" world.

I've never heard anyone propose that us leaving us going to cause those groups to get along -- sounds like you made that up.

And I disagree: US troops CAN stop them from slaughtering each other. It is a lack of US troops that cannot stop the slaughter.

Keeping the peace is a secondary mission. The primary mission is regional control.

Youre exactly right.

We're the only thing keeping them from killing each other, and the sad reality is we're not even doing a good job of that!

80% of Iraqis want us out of their country. Its their country! They have the final say in my opinion. And well over half of them now feel its OK to kill American soldiers. As far as I'm concerned we should be getting the hell out ASAP.

And youre right on the last point too.

I think Saddam did a far better job than we are, and he didn't want to attack the US!
