crunches and sit ups wont make your belly smaller - actually it will make it look bigger since there is gona be more muscle underneath the layer of fat. they dont burn fat.
the only exercise that burns fat is cardio - 4-6 times a week for 30-50min combined with light weight training
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Crunches will only tone your abdominal muscles, they won't do too much to quickly burn fat. You need some type of cardio exercise that you can do to burn off the excess fat. Do about 100-200 crunches a day, twisting knee raises, steam engines, or any core workout routine. In addition, do about 30-45 minutes of gritty, sweaty cardio. Stationary bike, swimming, elliptical machine, etc. Best of luck!

Doing crunches or sit ups alone will not burn the fat, it will strengthen your core muscles only. You need to do some kind of high intense cardio routine. If you are not allowed to run then try a elliptical machine, or stationary bike,

well, crunches make you have a sore back after you do them,
i suggest you dont do 1000 sit ups in a day, i tried had back pains and bloatign for a week.

But to burn off fat you cant just do sit ups, do some squats and twists and etc.

but i would say around 100 in the morning and 100 at night at most!

Crunches won't really help burn fat, they are used to gain muscle. More muscle will eventually burn fat faster, but the 'pudge' needs to be sweat off using cardio workouts. Maybe you cannot run, but you need to do something to move your body and sweat.

Maybe you can't RUN, but, if you can WALK, you can burn almost as many calories in the same time. Also, the lower intensity activity will boost your metabolism and keep it there longer. Also, look into bicycling as an alternative low impact exercise.
Also, try weight training. As you build muscle, it will burn more calories than being chubby will.
But basically, you have to take in fewer calories than you burn.
Crunches won't do much in the weight loss department.

you can only burn fat with cardio, if you can't run, try an elliptical bike or regular bike,or one of the low impact exercise classes or DVDs... crunches will only tighten the muscles but not burn fat...

Swimming is a good all around exercise. You need a combination of healthy diet and regular exercise to loose fat. Take care.
