Those who live to please their own desires will lose out on spiritual life, whereas the person who is not out to please oneself but God will keep it for eternal life.
There is nothing outside of God worth living for!
We were made by God, for God, to glorify Him.
He is worthy of ALL praise.

In other words: The man who cares to much about his life and not enough on the Lord is going to lose all that he loves. The man who loves the lord and doesn't care about the world is going to gain the world and eternal life...

It means that if you love the things of the world, you will loose them. If you love God more then life, you will have eternal life.
Basically, be in the world, not of the world.

It is talking about values and priorities. Loving life as we have it in this wicked system of things is choosing against God. Having spiritual interests and God's will first priority in our lives will gain eternal life on a paradise earth.

Yes, it means that in order to secure eternal life, you have to hate your life. God will then let you keep that life for all eternity. Yes, god is a sadistic bastard.
Do not take from, or add to, the words of god... the verse speaks for itself and does not need translation.

I understand that "hate" didn't mean the same then, as it does today. For example, "Moderation in all things" meant "kindness in all things" in those days; not simply the middle of the road, or luke-warm, or not extravagant.

Thanks for the reminder.
Jesus said "Unless you take up your cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. If a man loves his father, mother, children, brothers and sisters and his own life more than me, he cannot be my disciple... No one of you can be my disciple who does not give up all his own possessions" Luke 14:26-35

read the context (verses around it)
26 If any man serve me, let him follow me;and where I am,there shall also my servant be:if any man serve me,him will my Father honor.
Serve Jesus or live for self.
